Rihanna has not announced a release date for her next album. In April 2024, she said it would be “amazing” only if it met her creative expectations and reflected her growth. In August 2026, reports said she was working on music and in the studio, but did not confirm a finished album or a schedule.
What Rihanna said about the album
At a Fenty Beauty Soft’lit Foundation launch on April 27, 2024, Rihanna spoke to Extra about the long-awaited follow-up to 2016’s ANTI. Rolling Stone published her remarks on April 29:

“It’s gonna be amazing. It has to be — that is the only reason it’s not out yet. If I’m not feeling it and I’m not feeling like it represents the evolution, the time I spent away. There should be a show of growth, right? I want to play, and I feel like music is a playground, and I want to have fun with it and show truly where I am at.”
The point was not that an album was ready to arrive. Rihanna described the standard she wanted it to meet: it should reflect her evolution and feel creatively true to where she is now. She also said she wanted to have fun making it. Rolling Stone reported the interview and remarks; BET also covered the launch and her comments about growth.

Is R9 the album’s official title?
No official title is established in the cited reports. “R9” is fan and media shorthand for the anticipated follow-up, based on its expected place as Rihanna’s ninth studio album. It should not be treated as a confirmed title.

No confirmed release date is reported. In August 2026, A$AP Rocky said Rihanna was working on music and in the studio, according to Billboard Canada and TheGrio. That update indicates activity, not that a specific album is complete, titled, or scheduled for release.
For listeners revisiting the album that came before the anticipated follow-up, ANTI is Rihanna’s 2016 predecessor—not a release of R9.
