Established Latin music artists can help emerging performers move forward in more ways than advice alone. In examples reported by People en Español on September 18, 2024, support ranged from Marc Anthony discovering and signing Luis Figueroa to Ana Bárbara taking Majo Aguilar on tour, Ricky Martin advising Johann Vera, Romeo Santos sharing creative resources with Chris Lebrón, and Carlos Vives guiding Ilona’s album. These stories show different routes into the industry, not a ranking of which route works best.

Five artist relationships, five forms of support

The pairings below come from a 2024 People en Español feature. They illustrate how established artists may open doors or help a younger performer develop, but the feature does not compare their results using a shared measure.

Marc Anthony and Luis Figueroa: discovery, signing and resources

Marc Anthony noticed Luis Figueroa after a backup-singer performance for Romeo Santos and a YouTube cover of “Flor pálida.” He contacted Figueroa while the singer was in Spain and offered him a signing with Magnus Media. Figueroa said Anthony saw his potential and provided resources to help him grow as a well-rounded artist. He also credited Anthony with teaching him patience, persistence and the importance of being a good person. “He was the one who had a vision for my talent, and he helped me develop with the resources to grow as a well-rounded artist,” Figueroa said. Ana Bárbara and Majo Aguilar: recognition and touring

Ana Bárbara recognized Majo Aguilar’s talent and later brought her on tour. Ana Bárbara described empathizing with another artist’s dreams and plans, while also pointing to Aguilar’s discipline and seriousness about her career. Touring offered a practical opportunity to perform before audiences, alongside the personal encouragement.

Ricky Martin and Johann Vera: advice and trust

Johann Vera met Ricky Martin through the reality competition La Banda. Vera described Martin as a friend and mentor who had been involved in his process from early on. He also said he sought Martin’s advice about being honest regarding his sexual orientation. That is Vera’s account of a specific relationship; it should not be generalized into a claim about what LGBTQ artists experience or need. “I feel like he has become a friend, a mentor. He’s been involved in my whole process,” Vera said.

Romeo Santos and Chris Lebrón: creative access and public support

After hearing Chris Lebrón’s songs, Romeo Santos became an ally and sent instrumentals for him to work on through the connection with Arcángel’s Flow Factory. Santos also publicly praised Lebrón’s talent. The example centers on access to material for creative work as well as an established artist’s endorsement.

Carlos Vives and Ilona: developing a distinct local sound

Carlos Vives’s Gaira Música Local looks for Colombian talent. Ilona said Vives guided her album Relatos de calle and valued the preservation of local sound and its subtleties. For Ilona, the support was not only about advancing a career; it also involved shaping music with attention to cultural identity. “Carlos is a dreamer, an incredible, passionate human being, a lover of music. And he is on a personal mission to rescue the local sound,” she said.

What these examples say about mentorship

Mentorship here is a broad term for several different kinds of help. Across the five pairings, the reported support includes:

  • Personal guidance: Anthony’s lessons about persistence and character, and Martin’s ongoing advice to Vera.
  • Discovery and industry access: Anthony’s outreach to Figueroa and offer through Magnus Media.
  • Creative resources: Santos’s instrumentals for Lebrón and the resources Anthony made available to Figueroa.
  • Performance opportunities: Ana Bárbara’s tour invitation to Aguilar.
  • Artistic direction and identity: Vives’s guidance on Ilona’s album and his interest in local Colombian sound.

These pathways are not interchangeable, and the feature offers no common outcome data that would support ranking them. Together, they make visible a wider point: support can mean offering counsel, backing, material, stage time or sustained attention to an artist’s own sound.

Artist mentorship and organized programs are different routes

Individual artist relationships sit alongside institutional efforts to support music education and cultural preservation. Those programs may share an interest in helping the next generation, but they are not the same activity as one artist mentoring another.

Music education and cultural preservation

The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation describes scholarships for music students aged 17–25 who face financial hardship, grants for research and preservation of Latin music, and programs for middle school, high school and college students. Its website lists cumulative figures, including more than $17.1 million invested in education and cultural preservation initiatives and more than 500 scholarships awarded, but does not state the measurement period for those totals. Its reported 90% college completion rate, compared with a 60% national average, also lacks a stated methodology and period; it should not be read as a controlled, like-for-like comparison.

Philanthropy and youth programs

Marc Anthony and Henry Cárdenas created Maestro Cares in January 2012 to address housing, education and health challenges faced by orphaned children in developing Latin American countries, according to Sony Music Latin’s Marc Anthony biography. Separately, a TelevisaUnivision press release dated August 4, 2026, reported that Maestro Cares had supported the development of more than 35 projects in Latin America and the United States since 2012. That figure describes the foundation’s projects, not the artist-to-artist mentorship examples above. TelevisaUnivision, August 4, 2026

The Ricky Martin Foundation describes work focused on human rights, education, health and justice, particularly for people affected by human trafficking and at-risk children and youth. Its listed programs include Centro TAU, a child development and prevention center in Loíza, Puerto Rico; a bilingual K–6 public charter school; humanitarian relief; and a coastal resilience and community education project. These are part of Martin’s broader public work, distinct from his mentorship of Vera.

Why the distinction matters

A personal relationship can provide advice, access or collaboration tailored to one artist. A scholarship or preservation grant is an organized program with its own eligibility, scope and goals. Both can contribute to a healthier music ecosystem, but evidence about one should not be used as proof of the impact of the other. The five reported pairings offer concrete examples of how support can happen; institutional programs show a parallel route through education and cultural preservation.
