Rickson Gracie says he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2021 and went public with the news in 2023. Since then, he has described changes in his movement and coordination while emphasizing adaptation, spirituality and his wish to keep teaching jiu-jitsu. His account is personal testimony, not a guide to treating Parkinson’s.
When was Rickson Gracie diagnosed?
Gracie said he received his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2021. He disclosed it publicly in June 2023, during an interview on Kyra Gracie’s YouTube channel covered by Combate.com. In that interview he said he had experienced a hand tremor and some difficulty moving. The date of diagnosis and the date he shared it publicly are distinct: he was diagnosed two years before the disclosure.
What changes has Gracie described?
His descriptions have included tremor, reduced movement and changes in physical ability. In a January 2025 interview with MMA Fighting, he said he was losing “speed, rhythm and coordination.” In 2023, he said the diagnosis itself had not felt dramatic to him, even as he acknowledged the symptoms.
Parkinson’s affects people differently. The Parkinson’s Foundation’s 2024 fact sheet lists movement symptoms such as slowness, stiffness, tremor, and walking or balance problems, as well as possible non-movement symptoms including depression, anxiety, fatigue, sleep problems and changes in thinking. A person’s symptoms and the course of the disease cannot be inferred from another person’s experience. The Foundation estimates that about 70% of people with Parkinson’s experience tremor; that population figure does not indicate what Gracie’s individual condition will be.

What does “invisible jiu-jitsu” mean to him?
Gracie has described his mental and emotional approach as “invisible jiu-jitsu.” He uses the phrase as a personal philosophy for meeting life’s challenges, not as a clinical treatment or a claim that mindset changes the disease. In a December 2024 interview with UOL, he described Parkinson’s as “almost a brother” and spoke of wanting to create a way of teaching jiu-jitsu for people who feel fragile or insecure.
His stated focus is on adapting and continuing to share what he has learned. In the 2025 MMA Fighting interview, he put it this way: “I was reborn from the ashes. I feel like a sick person today, but happy to be able to continue passing along the vision.” The quote conveys his outlook; it does not describe a medical outcome.

What has he said about exercise and other routines?
Gracie has discussed lifestyle changes, exercise, physiotherapy and personal choices including diet, fasting, supplements, CBD oil and ozonated water. In a November 2024 report, Graciemag reported his statement that he was doing physiotherapy five times a week. These accounts describe his own routines and experience; they do not establish that any of those practices cure Parkinson’s, stop its progression or are appropriate for someone else.
The Parkinson’s Foundation says regular exercise can improve movement and non-movement symptoms, while treatment is individualized. Its overview describes care that may include dopamine-related medication to manage symptoms, physical, occupational or speech therapy and other specialists; some people may have surgery in their treatment plan. Diagnosis is based on symptoms, medical history and physical examination, with lab tests or imaging sometimes used to rule out other conditions. This general information is not an assessment of Gracie’s care.

Gracie discusses his outlook and life after diagnosis in his book Comfort in Darkness: The Power of Invisible Jiu-Jitsu, which was also covered in the MMA Fighting and UOL interviews. It is a personal account and philosophy, not a Parkinson’s treatment guide.
