In a December 2024 podcast interview, travel writer Rick Steves reflected on what his career had cost him in family life and relationships, even as he described his work as a mission. The remarks were reported by People in the context of his prostate cancer diagnosis. They describe his perspective at that time, not his current health status.

What does Rick Steves regret?

Steves discussed his regrets in a December 14, 2024 episode of The New York Times podcast The Interview, according to People’s report published the following day. He reflected on the personal life he might have had if he had chosen a more settled career.

“I would love to be the person I was before I was a travel writer,” Steves said, as quoted by People. He imagined a life as a piano teacher: “I would have had a very, very beautiful life being a piano teacher, coming home every night for dinner and mowing the lawn, and joining clubs, and, you know, being regular and reliable.”

His comments connected the demands of travel writing with time away from home and effects on family and relationships. The piano-teacher life was an alternative he pictured, not a claim that he wished he had never pursued travel writing.

Why did he continue to see his work as a mission?

Steves’s account held regret and purpose together. “But I’ve chosen a different path, and this is a path that is — it’s a mission for me,” he said in the quotation reported by People. He also acknowledged the trade-off: “And I choose that knowing it’s not gonna be without a cost.”

In the interview as summarized, his mission was to help people travel constructively. His reflections are personal: they describe how he understood the costs of his own career, rather than offering a general rule about work, family, or relationships.

What did Rick Steves say about his cancer diagnosis?

People placed the reflections on career and family in the context of Steves’s prostate cancer diagnosis and his willingness to discuss the experience openly. The report quoted him saying, “I’ve always thought it’s important not to keep these things secret, to be embarrassed about anything.”

The report does not establish details of his diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, or current health. It is a record of remarks tied to a December 2024 interview, so it should not be read as an update on his condition today.
