Those are Forbes Australia estimates—not confirmed base salaries or net worth figures—and the ranking covers TV personalities beyond talk-show hosts. No current, comprehensive talk-show-only ranking establishes who is definitively the richest host overall.
How much do late-night hosts make?
Forbes Australia’s 2025 estimate of top-paid television hosts lists these late-night presenters among its earners:
| Host | Estimated 2025 earnings from TV work | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Jimmy Fallon | $16 million | Forbes Australia’s estimate for TV work, not a verified base salary. |
| Jimmy Kimmel | $16 million | Forbes Australia’s estimate for TV work, not a verified base salary. |
| Stephen Colbert | $15 million | Forbes Australia’s estimate for TV work, not a verified base salary. |
These are the latest retrieved estimates for these late-night hosts, not proof that they are the three richest talk-show hosts overall. The list includes television personalities from other fields, and no newer comprehensive talk-show-only ranking is established here. Forbes Australia’s 2025 list reports estimates derived from interviews with agents, lawyers, managers, executives, and other industry experts.
Who is the richest talk show host?
There is no definitive answer in the current figures: the newest list is a broad TV-host ranking, not a ranking limited to talk-show hosts. Its overall leader, Tom Brady, was estimated to earn $37.5 million from TV work as a football analyst—not as a talk-show host. Guy Fieri, Bobby Flay, and Gordon Ramsay were each estimated at $33 million as food and lifestyle television personalities. They are not straightforward comparisons with late-night presenters.

#1 Best Overall
For a historical benchmark, Guinness World Records identifies Oprah Winfrey’s estimated US$275 million in 2008 as the highest annual earnings for a television talk-show host ever. That is a record for a past year, not her current salary or a present-day comparison. Guinness World Records attributes the figure to Forbes.
What does a TV-work earnings estimate include?
Forbes Australia’s figures estimate pretax earnings specifically for television work. They do not deduct representation fees and may include payments made under different arrangements: a traditional salary, a production deal, or a licensing arrangement. They are not necessarily a host’s paycheck, take-home pay, or total income.
The distinction matters because some presenters have income streams beyond their main show. Forbes notes that Fallon and Kimmel also host network game shows. John Oliver’s deal is linked to HBO Max sign-ups. Pat McAfee licenses his owned show to ESPN, retains editorial control, and pays staff and production costs from the licensing arrangement. A headline figure can therefore describe a different economic arrangement from a conventional salary.
The 2025 estimates exclude other categories such as radio, endorsements, businesses, appearances, and investments. They should not be read as total earnings across a person’s career or as net worth.

Why earnings differ—and why late-night pay is under pressure
Forbes’ 2025 reporting describes reduced budgets and four-nights-per-week schedules at ABC and NBC, along with downward pressure on compensation during contract renewals. The article reports that some talent may be asked to take on additional projects to maintain earlier compensation, and that streaming platforms do not offer salaries comparable to the largest television deals. These are observations in Forbes’ reporting, not rules that establish every host’s contract.
The economics also reflect competition for programming budgets. Forbes quotes Boston Consulting Group managing director and senior partner Neal Zuckerman: “As sports becomes a differentiator, and as sports rights become more precious and expensive, given both the attention and the number of entities negotiating for them, that certainly causes other content formats and money to be pushed out.”

What did Oprah and Dr. Phil earn in earlier estimates?
Older Forbes figures offer historical context, but they use different periods and ranking scopes from the 2025 TV-work estimates, so they should not be treated as a direct year-to-year comparison.

What to check before comparing host salaries
- Year and scoring period: An annual estimate from 2008 or a June-to-June period is not the same measurement as a 2025 estimate.
- Who is included: A TV-host ranking may mix talk-show presenters with sports analysts and lifestyle personalities.
- What income counts: TV-only estimates omit other ventures, while older totals may include additional sources.
- How a deal pays: Salary, production payments, and licensing revenue are different forms of compensation; a reported amount may not be personal take-home pay.
- Whether the figure is verified: The cited amounts are published estimates, not disclosed or independently verified contract terms.
