The estimates are $2.5 billion, $1.6 billion, $1.4 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively. This is a dated comparison of four reported figures, not a definitive ranking of every musician associated with the 20th century: the available sources do not establish a comprehensive list or a single inclusion rule.
These are estimated net worths, not audited statements of personal assets and debts. The figures come from different reporting contexts and may include music rights, touring income, property and businesses outside music. The source and date matter as much as the number.

2025 estimates reported for four musicians
Uproxx’s 2025 article reports these figures as Forbes estimates. The inclusion rule below is used for this article: musicians whose careers began in the 20th century. The source does not itself supply a comprehensive ranking under that definition, and Taylor Swift’s career began in 2004; she is included because she appears in the cited 2025 report, not because she meets that strict career-start rule. Accordingly, this is best read as a set of prominent reported estimates rather than a consistently defined ranking.
| Artist | Estimate | Currency | Estimate date | Publisher and source context | Inclusion rule | Individual or household |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jay-Z | $2.5 billion | U.S. dollars | 2025 | Uproxx reporting a Forbes estimate | Included in the 2025 report; career began in the 20th century | Individual estimate |
| Taylor Swift | $1.6 billion | U.S. dollars | 2025 | Uproxx reporting a Forbes estimate | Included in the 2025 report; career began in the 21st century | Individual estimate |

Why musician fortunes are difficult to compare
A net-worth estimate tries to account for assets and liabilities that are not fully public. Music rights may be privately held or subject to contracts; business stakes and property valuations can also be uncertain. Money.it notes that private agreements complicate attempts to establish musicians’ fortunes. Different publishers may use different methods, and an estimate can change as assets or valuations change.
Fortunes can also have very different sources. Forbes’ profile of Jay-Z points to growth in part from liquor businesses, while its Taylor Swift profile attributes wealth to royalties and touring, her music catalog and real estate. Those mixes make the headline totals poor measures of music earnings alone.

What the estimates say about music, catalogs and other assets
Jay-Z: music alongside business holdings
Forbes says Jay-Z has more than doubled his fortune since becoming hip-hop’s first billionaire in 2019, citing liquor businesses among the contributors. Forbes also describes him as the world’s wealthiest musician, but that profile’s live estimate can change. It is distinct from the dated $2.5 billion estimate Uproxx reported for 2025. See Forbes’ Jay-Z profile.
Taylor Swift: touring, royalties, catalog and property
Forbes describes Swift as the first musician to reach billionaire status primarily through songs and performances. Its profile estimates nearly $800 million from royalties and touring, a catalog worth about $600 million, and around $110 million in real estate. These are Forbes profile estimates, not independently audited balances, and they are components of an estimate rather than separate net-worth totals. See Forbes’ Taylor Swift profile.

Bruce Springsteen: a catalog transaction is not total net worth
Forbes Australia reported that Springsteen sold his music catalog to Sony in 2021 for $500 million. That is a reported transaction value, not his current net worth or a recurring annual income figure. A sale can change the mix of assets behind a wealth estimate, but the deal value should not be added to a net-worth estimate as if the two measured different parts of a single total. See Forbes Australia’s report on Swift and Springsteen.

The Sunday Times Rich List estimated Paul McCartney and his wife, Nancy Shevell, had combined wealth of £1 billion in 2024, according to the Associated Press. AP reported that £50 million of that estimate was attributed to Shevell. This is a household figure in pounds, not an individual estimate for McCartney, and it comes from a different year and source context than the four U.S.-dollar estimates above. See the Associated Press report on the 2024 Rich List estimate.

How to read a net-worth ranking
- Check the date and publisher. A 2025 estimate is not interchangeable with a current live profile or an estimate published in another year.
- Check what is being measured. Net worth is not the same as annual earnings, the value of a catalog deal, or income from touring.
- Check whose wealth is counted. Individual estimates and combined household estimates cannot be ranked as though they were the same measure.
- Check the inclusion rule. “20th-century musician” may refer to birth year, career start or historical association. The four-name 2025 report does not resolve that ambiguity for a complete ranking.
