Why Richard Smallwood mattered to gospel music
Smallwood was a singer, pianist, composer, arranger, music director and recording artist. He led the Richard Smallwood Singers and later Vision, writing gospel music that reached audiences well beyond his own groups. “Total Praise” and “I Love the Lord” are among his best-known compositions. Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Destiny’s Child and Boyz II Men were among the artists who performed or recorded his songs, according to the Senate memorial resolution and BMI.

The scale of his early impact is reflected in chart milestones cited by the U.S. Senate’s January 2026 memorial resolution: the Richard Smallwood Singers’ 1982 debut remained on Billboard’s gospel album chart for 87 weeks, and the group’s album Psalms topped that chart in 1984. The resolution says Psalms earned the group its first Grammy nomination. These are milestones reported in the resolution, rather than an independent audit of chart or awards databases.

Education, musical formation and recognition
Howard University identifies Smallwood as a 1971 graduate. He later earned a Master of Divinity degree in 2004. His years in Howard’s gospel community helped shape his musical formation, and he served as music director at Union Temple.
BMI reports that Smallwood received eight Grammy nominations and won a Grammy for production work on Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2006. The Senate resolution also credits him with three Dove Awards.

How colleagues described his influence
Smallwood’s representative, Bill Carpenter, told the Associated Press: “Richard was so dedicated to music, and that was the thing that kept him alive all these years.” Carpenter was describing Smallwood’s commitment to music amid longstanding health issues. Singer Chaka Khan told the AP: “His music didn’t just inspire me, it transformed me.”
