Richard Bartlett Gregg (1885–1974) helped American readers understand how Gandhi’s nonviolent methods could work as an organized strategy for social and political change. After traveling to India in 1925 and living there through 1929, Gregg wrote The Power of Nonviolence, first published in 1934. The book drew on Gandhi’s ideas and practice, but it was Gregg’s own interpretation—not a literal translation of Gandhi’s words.

Who was Richard Gregg?

Gregg was an American pacifist, writer, activist, and social philosopher. Born in Colorado Springs, he attended Harvard, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1907 and a law degree in 1911. He later worked in industrial relations, where he became interested in Gandhi’s writing and the possibility of nonviolent action as a means of confronting injustice.

In 1925, Gregg went to India to study Gandhi’s movement. The University of Pennsylvania’s archival finding aid describes his residence there as lasting through 1929. That experience, alongside his later writing and correspondence, made him more than a commentator at a distance: he had direct contact with people and events connected to the Indian independence movement.

How did Gregg explain Gandhi’s ideas for American readers?

Gregg’s central contribution was to interpret and systematize Gandhi’s ideas for readers in the United States and the West. His 1934 book, The Power of Nonviolence, was not a biography of Gandhi. It examined how organized nonviolent action could exert power against violent opponents and bring about social change, as well as how it might serve as an alternative to war.

Cambridge University Press describes the book’s argument this way: “Drawing on Gandhi’s ideas and practice, Gregg explains in detail how the organized power of nonviolence (power-with) exercised against violent opponents can bring about small and large transformative social change and provide an effective substitute for war.” The phrase “power-with” captures a key distinction: nonviolence is not simply the absence of force, but a collective way of acting that seeks change without reproducing violence.

Calling Gregg a translator of Gandhi is therefore best understood in an intellectual sense. He presented Gandhi’s ideas and methods in a form intended to make their strategic and political significance legible to Western audiences; the evidence does not suggest that he literally translated Gandhi from an Indian language.

What did Gregg’s time in India and his papers document?

The University of Pennsylvania’s Richard Bartlett Gregg papers include correspondence and news reports concerning the Indian independence movement, collected between 1930 and 1938, with most material dating from 1930 to 1933. The finding aid names letters from Gandhi, Mahadev Desai, Jivraj Mehta, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Mirabehn. This correspondence gives an archival basis for describing Gregg as a participant-observer and correspondent as well as an author.

After returning to the United States, Gregg promoted nonviolence and simple living as ways to transform Western society. The archive describes him as dividing his time between Boston and a rural farm while maintaining connections with supporters of Indian independence.

How did The Power of Nonviolence change over time?

Gregg’s book first appeared in 1934 and was revised in 1944 and 1959. A Stanford biography characterizes it as the first American book on nonviolence; that description concerns its place in American publishing, not a claim of global priority. Cambridge University Press’s James Tully-edited edition presents the definitive 1959 text alongside earlier material and contextual scholarship, including a major introduction, earlier forewords, a chapter from the 1934 edition, a 1929 excerpt, a biography, and a bibliography.

For a reader seeking Gregg’s argument in an historically contextualized edition, the Cambridge volume is the most direct route to the book. Its contents also make it possible to see how the work developed across editions rather than treating the 1934, 1944, and 1959 texts as identical.

What is the documented connection between Gregg and Martin Luther King Jr.?

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford records that King included Gregg’s book among works that influenced him. The institute also reports a sentence from King’s foreword to the second edition: “new ways of solving conflicts, without violence, must be discovered and put into operation”. This establishes a reading connection; it does not, by itself, show that Gregg alone shaped King or determined the tactics of particular civil-rights campaigns.

Gregg’s place in the story is thus clearest as one important channel through which Gandhian nonviolence reached American readers and activists. Gandhi developed and practiced the movement’s ideas; Gregg explained their possible strategic power in a US context; and King’s reading record documents one later point of contact.
