Richard Gere did not simply vanish after Pretty Woman. He moved from leading-man fame into a wider mix of character roles, became less defined by the Hollywood spotlight, and has continued acting. In 2025, the Spanish Film Academy honored him with its Goya Internacional award; in 2026, a joking remark about his son’s acting career was mistaken by some for a retirement announcement.
How Richard Gere rose to stardom
Gere’s career spans five decades, with roles across auteur films, romantic dramas, and studio hits. The Spanish Film Academy’s account of his 2025 Goya Internacional award highlights Days of Heaven, An Officer and a Gentleman, American Gigolo, Pretty Woman, and Chicago. Gere has said he especially values Days of Heaven, his early collaboration with director Terrence Malick. (Spanish Film Academy)
Pretty Woman (1990), in which he starred with Julia Roberts, became one of the defining reference points for his public image. That association has endured even as his work has taken other directions.
Why his career seemed to change
From leading man to character roles
Gere’s later work includes more varied character parts rather than a steady run of roles built around his romantic-leading-man image. Examples include Arbitrage (2012), Time Out of Mind (2014), The Benefactor (2015), and The Dinner (2017). These films show a continuing acting career, not an abrupt disappearance. (The Independent; 2017 interview)

His own account of choosing roles
In a 2017 interview, Gere said, “My career has never been thought out.” He explained that he had not engineered a particular path, but had taken roles he wanted among those offered to him. That account complicates the idea that a deliberate retreat or a single career setback explains the shift in his visibility. (The Independent)
The record supports a change in role type and public profile more clearly than a professional collapse. Nor does the available reporting establish that he retired.

Why Pretty Woman still defines part of his image
At a 2024 Venice Film Festival masterclass, Gere revisited the film’s piano scene and joked, “This actor and this actress obviously had no chemistry between them.” Vanity Fair reported that the scene was improvised: director Garry Marshall asked what Gere did late at night in a hotel, and Gere said he would find a piano and play. The moment developed on set and became part of the finished film. Gere recalled, “This was never in the script.” (Vanity Fair)
What Gere has been doing recently
Oh, Canada
In December 2024, Gere was promoting Oh, Canada, a Paul Schrader film based on a novel by Russell Banks. He plays Leonard Fife, an aging filmmaker reflecting on his life. Antena 3’s coverage discussed the aging makeup used for the role and quoted Gere describing filmmaking as play. That report covered the film’s promotion at the time; it does not establish where the film is currently available to watch. (Antena 3)

Spain and possible future projects
The Spanish Film Academy reported in 2025 that Gere had been living in Spain since the previous autumn. He said it was a good place to film, expressed interest in working with Pedro Almodóvar, and mentioned the possibility of producing projects there. Those were interests and plans stated at the time, not confirmation that any such project was completed. (Spanish Film Academy)
The retirement joke
In June 2026, The Independent reported that Gere praised his son Homer’s emerging acting career and joked, “So I can retire now. I’m passing the torch.” The remark referred to his son’s prospects; it was not an announcement that Gere was retiring. (The Independent)

Advocacy beyond acting
Gere has also been known for advocacy. Cadena SER’s coverage of the Goya award describes his longstanding support for Tibetan autonomy and the preservation of Tibetan culture, as well as his support for Indigenous peoples, refugees, and people experiencing homelessness. In an interview about Time Out of Mind, he described wanting the film to engage with and support local homelessness groups. The cited accounts document those commitments but do not quantify their impact. (Cadena SER; The Independent)
What the “rise and fall” framing gets wrong
Gere’s rise to major stardom is clear. So is the change in the roles and public image associated with him: the actor celebrated for films such as American Gigolo and Pretty Woman has continued working in projects that include character-driven dramas. But the available record does not show a sustained career collapse or retirement. His more recent work, Spain-related creative ambitions, and 2025 international award point to an ongoing career rather than a simple fall from fame.
