The “20-year ban” often used to describe it is not established as a formal Academy-wide sanction: a 1993 report attributed a threatened ban to the ceremony’s producer, while the Academy press office later told GQ that it does not ban presenters.
What happened at the 1993 Oscars?
Gere presented at the 65th Academy Awards on March 29, 1993. He departed from his scripted remarks to speak about human rights in China and Tibet. A contemporary report said telecast producer Gil Cates threatened Gere, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins with exclusion from future awards shows he produced, objecting to presenters using their invited slots for unscripted political statements. Read the contemporary report.
Was Richard Gere formally banned by the Academy?
The available accounts do not establish that the Academy imposed a formal, Academy-wide ban. In a later report, GQ said the Academy press office responded to its question about the alleged ban: “We don’t ban presenters” and “There’s no such thing as a ban.” Those statements are the press office’s words as reported by GQ, not a published Academy ruling or a statement from a named spokesperson. Read GQ’s account.
The distinction matters: the 1993 report described a producer’s threatened restriction on future shows he produced; the later press-office response denied a general practice of banning presenters. Neither account, as reported, demonstrates that Gere was formally suspended by the Academy.

What did Gere say about the absence?
In a Variety interview published December 3, 2025, while discussing his work on the Dalai Lama documentary Wisdom of Happiness, Gere said: “I didn’t take it particularly personally.” He added: “I didn’t think there were any bad guys in the situation. I do what I do and I certainly don’t mean anyone any harm.” These comments describe his own view of the episode; they do not settle whether a formal ban existed. Read the Variety interview.

Variety reported that Gere did not present at the Oscars again until 2013. That gap—roughly two decades after the 1993 controversy—is the basis for the shorthand. It describes his reported absence from presenting, not a verified 20-year Academy suspension.
Rank #2
The record therefore supports a more precise account: Gere’s unscripted remarks prompted a reported threat from producer Gil Cates; the Academy press office later denied that presenters are banned; and Gere returned to presenting in 2013, according to Variety.
