What Richard Chamberlain was famous for
Dr. Kildare made him a television star

Shogun and The Thorn Birds brought miniseries fame
After the early success of Dr. Kildare, Chamberlain built a varied career rather than relying on one kind of role. He appeared in the television miniseries Centennial in 1978–79, then starred in Shogun (1980) and The Thorn Birds (1983). AP reports Golden Globe wins for the latter two productions. The Los Angeles Times also lists Emmy nominations for Shogun and The Thorn Birds, as well as for The Count of Monte Cristo (1975) and Wallenberg: A Hero’s Story (1985).
AP’s obituary says The Thorn Birds reportedly attracted 100 million viewers. That is a reported audience estimate, not an independently verified count or an official ABC measurement established here.

A career across film, theater and television
Born George Richard Chamberlain in Beverly Hills, he studied art at Pomona College and served in the U.S. Army as an infantry clerk in Korea. After returning to California, he pursued acting, earning the role of Kildare after guest appearances and an early film role, according to AP.
Following Dr. Kildare, he sought different kinds of work, including theater and films in England. In 1969 he played Hamlet with Birmingham Repertory Company. He later appeared in Richard Lester’s The Three Musketeers films and in The Towering Inferno. His stage work included Broadway revivals of My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music. The Los Angeles Times quoted him in 1984 saying, “I need to do theater. If I don’t, I feel something is missing.”
