Ric Flair vs. Eric Bischoff in WCW: What Happened in Their 1998 Feud

Ric Flair and Eric Bischoff’s WCW conflict was both a workplace dispute and a television storyline. Its public flashpoint came on September 14, 1998, when Flair returned to Monday Nitro after a dispute that followed his missed Thunder appearance earlier that year. The accounts explain why the clash mattered, but they do not establish every allegation about motive or the legal dispute.

10 things to know about the Flair–Bischoff rivalry

  1. It unfolded on and off camera

WWE describes the dispute as one of the rivalries that played out both on- and off-camera during the Monday Night War. The broadcast confrontation had a real workplace conflict behind it, though the available account does not make every on-screen element a complete record of what happened privately. WWE’s retrospective on backstage feuds presents the story from that perspective.

  2. The wider setting was WCW’s fight with WWE

In 1995, Bischoff and WCW developed Monday Nitro as a prime-time Monday competitor to WWE’s Raw. WWE’s history traces the launch idea to a conversation in which Ted Turner asked Bischoff how WCW could become competitive with Vince McMahon. That competition put WCW’s roster and its public image under intense scrutiny. WWE’s account of Nitro’s debut recounts the launch.

  3. Nitro’s ratings success raised the stakes

WWE reports that WCW and Nitro led Raw in television ratings for 84 consecutive weeks, from May 1996 to March 1998. That is WWE’s reported figure, not an independent recheck of the original ratings data. The run helps explain why the handling of prominent wrestlers became a high-profile issue.

  4. Flair believed he had helped bring major names to WCW

In his memoir, To Be the Man, Flair contended that Bischoff used him to attract major former WWE talent, then reduced his role after those wrestlers arrived. WWE summarizes Flair’s view as being left in a “bit player” role. That is Flair’s interpretation of Bischoff’s conduct, not an independently established account of Bischoff’s intent.

  5. Flair also described a personal grievance

WWE’s retrospective reports that Flair recalled Bischoff seeming to take pleasure in demeaning him. This is a recollection attributed to Flair; the available source does not independently verify what Bischoff intended or how he would characterize those interactions.

  6. The immediate crisis followed a missed Thunder appearance

In April 1998, Flair missed an episode of Thunder while attending a family event, according to WWE’s retrospective. WWE says the absence set litigation in motion and that Flair was removed from WCW television while the matter was resolved. The retrospective does not supply court pleadings, a ruling, or the contract, so it does not establish the legal merits or details beyond that account.

  7. Bischoff offered a different perspective

WWE cites Bischoff’s autobiography, Controversy Creates Cash, for his account of the missed appearance and his view that he had to maintain his position after Flair’s absence. This should be read alongside Flair’s version, not as a neutral resolution of the dispute: the available account does not independently adjudicate between the two memoirs.

  8. Flair returned to Nitro on September 14, 1998

WWE says Flair re-signed with WCW and returned to Nitro on September 14, 1998, in Greenville, South Carolina. He used the broadcast to air many of his grievances against Bischoff publicly. The chronology comes from WWE’s retrospective; a full recording or transcript of the segment is not established by that account.

  9. The return turned a private dispute into a public confrontation

Flair’s return mattered because the grievances were voiced on WCW television, in the very program that represented the company’s rivalry with WWE. It made the conflict visible to viewers without proving that every charge made in the segment—or every interpretation of the conflict—was settled fact.

The Monday Night War: WWE Raw vs. WCW Nitro
    • In 1995, two wrestling companies squared off on Monday night television to compete head to head in an unprecedented confrontation. On one side, Vince McMahon, the promoter who created WWE and made the industry what it is today. On the other, WCW, owned by media giant Ted Turner, and run by an ambitious man named Eric Bischoff. This is the whole story, told by those who created it, lived it, and
  10. WCW’s later fate is separate from the feud’s resolution

WWE’s history says it acquired WCW in 2001. That later corporate outcome provides an endpoint for WCW as a company, but it does not itself resolve the competing recollections in Flair’s and Bischoff’s books.

How to read the competing accounts

The most careful way to understand the feud is to separate the documented sequence from the participants’ explanations. WWE’s retrospectives provide a chronology: Flair missed Thunder in April 1998, litigation followed, and he returned to Nitro in September after re-signing. Flair’s memoir describes his belief that Bischoff sidelined and demeaned him; Bischoff’s autobiography gives his own account of the absence and his response. Without the memoirs themselves, the relevant legal record, and a full recording or transcript of the return segment, those accounts remain competing perspectives rather than a definitive verdict on motive or responsibility.
