Sutton worked for Cunningham and later held a development leadership role with his dance organization. On The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 13, she brought some of his ashes on the cast trip to Spain, hoping to release them somewhere meaningful.
How did Sutton Stracke know Merce Cunningham?
Before becoming a reality-TV personality, Sutton pursued dance. She told Bravo she had considered auditioning for the José Limón Dance Company but instead accepted a studio-manager job working for Cunningham. She later became director of development for the Cunningham Dance Foundation, then returned to Georgia to lead Augusta Ballet, according to Bravo’s 2023 career profile.
The connection was personal as well as professional. Bravo’s account of Sutton’s life before the show describes Cunningham as her former boss and says the two were close; Sutton has also described him as a longtime friend and mentor. After Cunningham died, Sutton received some of his ashes.
Who was Merce Cunningham?
Merce was the professional name of Mercier Philip Cunningham, born in Centralia, Washington, on April 16, 1919. He died at his home in New York City on July 26, 2009. The Merce Cunningham Trust biography describes him as one of the most important choreographers of his time and a major influence on modern dance.

Cunningham joined Martha Graham’s company as a soloist before establishing his own company in 1953. He also had a long artistic collaboration with composer John Cage, whom the Trust describes as his closest collaborator and life partner. The Trust credits Cunningham with 190 dances and more than 700 “Events,” and lists a MacArthur Fellowship in 1985 and the National Medal of Arts in 1990.
Why did Sutton bring his ashes to Spain on RHOBH?
In Season 13, Episode 13, Sutton brought some of Cunningham’s ashes on the cast trip to Spain. She said she wanted to release them in a place that mattered to her and make the trip meaningful: “I want to release these ashes in a significant place and make this a really meaningful trip.” Bravo covered the episode and Sutton’s explanation in its January 25, 2024 feature.

What remains of Cunningham’s work?
Cunningham’s dance company operated continuously from its founding until it closed in 2011, according to the Trust’s overview of his work and legacy. The Merce Cunningham Trust continues to preserve and share his work through archives, digital documentation, classes, repertory workshops and licensing.
Cunningham described dance as bound to the present moment: “Dance is most deeply concerned with each single instant as it comes along, and its life and vigor and attraction lie in just that singleness. It is as accurate and impermanent as breathing.” The quotation appears in the Trust’s biography.
