Spoilers for Invincible Season 3, episode 7, “What Have I Done?” and the corresponding comic storyline. Yes, Rex Splode dies: during an attack by alternate-universe Invincibles, he sacrifices himself to take down one of them. The loss matters not because it proves another Guardian is next, but because the series makes clear how little time its heroes have to recover—and how lasting the cost of a fight can be.
How does Rex Splode die?
In Season 3, episode 7, “What Have I Done?”, Mark and his allies are fighting 18 Invincible variants sent by Angstrom Levy. Rex stays behind and detonates himself to defeat one of the attackers, according to Amazon’s official recap. His death is a deliberate sacrifice in the middle of a battle the heroes are struggling to contain.
The sequence is part of a wider assault, not an isolated loss. The team has little time to recover and mourn before Conquest appears. Amazon’s recap says Mark later falls into a monthlong coma after fighting Conquest; it does not attribute that coma to Rex’s sacrifice alone.
How the episode changes the comic’s version
The animated death adapts the central action of the comic, but it is not a scene-for-scene match. SlashFilm’s comparison identifies the comic death as taking place in Invincible #60 and describes the same basic choice: Rex stays behind and detonates himself to stop an evil Invincible.

| Element | Comic | Animated episode |
|---|---|---|
| Pacing | SlashFilm describes the death as a brutal moment in a fast-moving battle. | The episode gives Rex more time to fight back and gives the sacrifice greater emphasis. |
| Character setup | The account does not describe the same relationship groundwork before the sacrifice. | Rex’s relationship with Shrinking Rae, including their consideration of leaving superhero work, adds emotional context to his choice. |
| Core sacrifice | Rex stays behind and detonates himself to stop an attacker. | The same central sacrifice is preserved, with different staging and buildup. |
The adaptation’s added emphasis makes the choice feel more personal, but it does not change the basic outcome: Rex saves others by giving up his own life.
What Rex’s death says about danger in Invincible
Executive producer Simon Racioppa has described lasting consequences as part of the series’ approach to peril. In an interview with Bam Smack Pow, he said: “A lot of the consequences that in other comic books are kind of just issue deep and then the character gets healed or goes through a magical process and comes back… In Invincible, those things are permanent for the most part.”

“For the most part” is an important qualification, not a guarantee about every character’s fate. Applied to Rex, Racioppa’s point helps explain why the sacrifice carries weight: the story does not treat a hero’s death as a temporary setback that can simply be undone. Combined with the variants’ attack and Conquest’s arrival, it supports a broader reading that the surviving heroes remain vulnerable and are under sustained pressure.

- Confirmed: Rex dies saving others during the multiversal assault, and Conquest arrives soon after the heroes’ fight with the variants.
- Supported interpretation: His sacrifice signals that heroism can carry lasting costs and that the team is not insulated from serious loss.
- Not established: These events do not confirm that a particular surviving Guardian will die next, or define a specific long-term consequence for every teammate.
Rex’s death therefore raises the stakes without serving as a reliable prediction of who the story will take next. The immediate danger is plain; the individual outcomes beyond it are not established by these events.
