Yiyun Li brings episodes from her life into conversation with writers who have accompanied her, using that literary exchange to consider depression, migration, family, language and the work of living. The result is intimate and searching, but not a chronological autobiography or a conventional story of recovery.
What kind of book is Dear Friend?
Li’s book is best approached as an essayistic memoir: personal experience and literary reflection continually illuminate one another, without adding up to a comprehensive account of her life. The Independent’s Lucy Scholes describes it as eight essays, ranging across Li’s Beijing childhood, service in the People’s Liberation Army, emigration, work as an immunologist and later writing career. The Guardian’s Lara Feigel, by contrast, emphasizes how little conventional biography the book offers and how much space it gives to reading and thought. Those descriptions point to the same formal choice: Li gives readers life material, but arranges it by association and inquiry rather than by a chronological timeline. (The Independent; The Guardian)
Penguin Random House presents the book as Li’s first memoir and describes it as a journey of recovery through literature. That description captures its reliance on books as companions, but “recovery” should not be mistaken for a tidy before-and-after plot. In a 2017 interview, Li said, “I don’t think I have a narrative arc.” The book’s refusal to make pain resolve into a neat lesson is part of its design, not a missing final chapter. (Penguin Random House; The Guardian)
How does reading shape the memoir?
Li writes about writers not as names on a reading list but as minds she can keep company with. The title itself comes from Katherine Mansfield’s journal, and Mansfield is among the literary presences through whom Li considers the distance between one person’s life and another’s. Her reflections also turn to William Trevor, Søren Kierkegaard and Philip Larkin, among others; the Guardian interview names Ivan Turgenev, Thomas Hardy, John McGahern and Elizabeth Bowen as further interlocutors. These encounters give the book its structure and its emotional method. A passage of memory can lead into an author’s sentence or a question raised by a novel; the literary discussion, in turn, becomes a way of looking at experience from a little distance. The movement makes reading feel like companionship, though not a substitute for human intimacy. As the publisher quotes Li’s book: “What a long way it is from one life to another, yet why write if not for that distance?” The question is a useful guide to the memoir: writing reaches toward another person while acknowledging that the gap cannot simply be erased. (Penguin Random House)
What does Li reveal about depression and recovery?
The memoir addresses suicidal depression and hospitalization as part of Li’s personal experience, without turning that experience into a clinical account or a guide to treatment. The Guardian interview describes her return to reading after hospitalization. Li told Paul Laity, “I needed to dissect, to cut from the inside.” The image conveys the book’s unsparing inward attention, but the writing does not promise that analysis alone can make suffering disappear. That restraint is important to the book’s honesty. Li rejects the familiar recovery narrative in which a person is broken, repaired and returned to a stable former self. “I’m not a broken eggshell; I’m not Humpty Dumpty,” she says in the interview. Her reflections make room for endurance and change without claiming a triumphant conclusion. Readers looking for a resolution may find that choice difficult; readers willing to stay with uncertainty may find it more truthful than a forced arc. (The Guardian)
How do language, migration and family enter the book?
Li grew up in China and spent her adult life as an immigrant in the United States, according to her publisher. The Guardian interview says she left China for the United States in 1996, at age 23. In that interview, she describes English as a space for exploring thoughts she could not express in her native tongue. Language here is not simply a marker of belonging: writing in English also creates distance from family, country of origin and the self shaped by another language. Family appears as a pattern Li has observed rather than a problem she claims to solve. “Family is a pattern; I’ve looked at it all my life, and I can’t change it,” she told Laity. That sentence captures the memoir’s cool precision: affection and estrangement are examined, but not converted into an easy reconciliation. The book’s reflective voice can make painful material feel controlled, even distant. That distance is also what lets Li examine it without pretending that telling a story has made every part of it manageable. (The Guardian)
Who is this memoir for?
Dear Friend suits readers who enjoy literary essays and are interested in how books become part of a life. It is less suited to someone seeking a full account of Li’s childhood, marriage, children or career in America: Feigel notes that those areas receive little conventional biographical detail. The memoir offers snapshots and reflection instead of a complete personal record, a distinction also reflected in Scholes’s account of its wide-ranging essays. (The Guardian; The Independent)

Its aphoristic, meditative form has a trade-off. The shifts between memory and literary thought can deepen intimacy by showing how Li makes meaning, but they can also keep a reader at a deliberate remove from the events themselves. Whether that feels illuminating or withholding will depend on what a reader wants from memoir. Li does not offer the momentum of a plotted life story; she offers the company of a mind testing what writing and reading can hold.
