Yes—but “softer” is best understood as a greater willingness to sit with grief and survivor’s guilt, not a retreat from the blunt observation or dry humor that define Vince Staples’s writing. On Dark Times, those qualities share the same concise, controlled frame.
What kind of album is Dark Times?
Released May 24, 2024, Dark Times is a 13-song album with a listed runtime of 35 minutes. Its brevity suits Staples’s economical approach: the record makes room for difficult feelings without turning them into an extended confession. Apple Music’s album listing and editorial essay present it as a snapshot of Staples in the present, rather than a grand statement about his whole life or career.

That distinction matters to the “softer side” question. The album does not discard the distance, precision, or unsentimental perspective associated with Staples. Instead, it lets loss and reflection come into sharper view within that familiar restraint.
Where does the vulnerability come through?
Loss and survivor’s guilt
Apple Music’s editorial account describes songs shaped by bereavement and survivor’s guilt, with “Government Cheese” among the tracks that address those subjects. The vulnerability is not simply a change in mood; it comes from looking directly at the weight of living through circumstances that have cost others their lives. The album’s plainspoken delivery keeps the emotion from becoming melodramatic.

#1 Best Overall
- Vince Staples' Dark Times serves as the Long Beach rapper's sixth studio album and is a snapshot of Staples presently: on top of the world on the surface, but reality might be trickier
“Étouffée” and the past
Wesley McLean, reviewing the album for Exclaim! on May 28, 2024, called it vulnerable and singled out “Étouffée,” noting its references back to earlier Staples projects. That backward glance adds texture: reflection on the present also means recognizing the history and experiences that shaped it. The song’s significance is less a clean break from earlier work than a new angle on it.
Why the album never becomes uniformly heavy
Apple Music also points to breezier, soulful beats and lighter moments on “Little Homies” and “Freeman,” alongside “Étouffée.” Humor remains part of the album’s emotional vocabulary. Staples’s dry wit can offer relief, but it can also sharpen an observation by refusing to dress it up. The contrast between grief and levity makes the record feel more human than a uniformly somber treatment would.
Rank #2
- Esteemed hip-hop artist Vince Staples has released his self-titled album, produced by Kenny Beats
Michael Uzowuru and LeKen Taylor are among the frequent collaborators involved in the beats, according to Apple Music’s editorial essay. That musical range gives the writing room to move between heavier reflection and lighter turns without making those shifts feel like a denial of the album’s central concerns.
How vulnerability fits Staples’s writing
Pitchfork’s Dylan Green described Dark Times as “another expertly written, starkly candid record” in a review published May 30, 2024. The word “another” is useful: the candor is not presented as an entirely new trait. What changes is the emphasis—how clearly the album lets grief, survivor’s guilt, and personal reflection sit alongside Staples’s familiar control and humor.

In an Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, Staples said, “No one’s coming to me from a fan standpoint looking for a single, or looking for a party record. But I do know the people who listen to my music are probably looking for thoughtfulness or creativity.” That is his view of his audience, not proof of what every listener wants. It does, however, help explain why the album’s focus is on considered writing and tonal detail rather than an obvious bid for a party anthem.

Dark Times does reveal a more exposed emotional register, particularly in its treatment of loss and survivor’s guilt. But “softer” should not be mistaken for less incisive. The album’s strongest tension is between openness and restraint: Staples allows painful subjects closer while keeping the bluntness, humor, and carefully measured writing that make the feelings land. It is a vulnerable record, not a repudiation of the voice that came before it.
