Mosi Reeves’s July 24, 2025, Rolling Stone review finds DON’T TAP THE GLASS entertaining and musically accomplished, but questions whether Tyler, the Creator is staying too close to familiar territory. The 10-song, 28-minute album delivers shape-shifting beats, swagger and flashes of vulnerability; its main limitation, in Reeves’s reading, is how little it pushes beyond Tyler’s established sound.
What the review says
Reeves hears an album that works on its own terms: concise, lively and built around strengths Tyler has developed over his career. The production shifts direction, while Tyler moves between deep-voiced rap and more off-kilter singing. Boasts sit beside anxious or exposed moments, giving the record more emotional contrast than a simple party-album description would suggest.

The review’s central reservation is not that the music fails, but that it feels familiar. Reeves hears influences and musical territory associated with Kanye West, OutKast and the Neptunes, and finds few major new turns across the 10 tracks. That leaves a tension at the heart of his assessment: Tyler sounds accomplished, yet the album does not make a strong case that he is reaching for a new creative direction.
Moments Reeves singles out
- “Big Poe” sets the tone with a Pharrell Williams appearance.
- “Sugar on My Tongue” leans into an Eighties funk feel.
- “Stop Playing With Me” is among the tracks Reeves highlights as part of the album’s entertaining run.
- “Don’t You Worry Baby” features Madison McFerrin.
- “Tell Me What It Is” brings the vulnerability that complicates the album’s bravado.
- “I’ll Take Care of You,” featuring Yebba, recalls the energy of Cherry Bomb for Reeves.
Why the title’s question matters
The review’s headline frames a distinction between what listeners may want from Tyler and what he may need as an artist. Reeves does not claim to know Tyler’s intentions. Instead, he asks whether an artist who has become so accomplished should take another risk: “Now that he’s matured into such an accomplished musician, one wonders if it isn’t worth trying again.” That is Reeves’s critical question, not a statement from Tyler about his plans.

Reeves also allows for another possibility: this album may be a deliberate pause before whatever comes next. The review leaves that interpretation open rather than treating it as confirmed intent. Its verdict is therefore mixed but not dismissive: the album is enjoyable and skillfully made, while its familiarity makes the listener wonder what a more radical next step might sound like.
