Its 18 tracks move across Nigerian-rooted styles, R&B, soul, amapiano and hip-hop. That breadth makes the album feel like a many-sided self-portrait, though its 54-minute runtime can also test its focus.
What does Born in the Wild mean?
Tems describes the album as an embrace of all of herself: the story of “the Nigerian girl that became this person called Tems.” In a GRAMMY.com interview, she explains that “the wilderness” refers to mental difficulties and the uncertain move from a conventional job toward music, when people around her did not believe in her.

“Born in the Wild is about survival; I was born in a survival state and raised to survive. Coming from that to now being someone who has the ability to dominate, the ability to overcome and to conquer — that’s the story. That’s my story,” Tems says. The title track gives that progression its clearest shape: a movement from a mental wilderness toward self-acceptance and the possibility of flourishing.
Why does the album feel spiritual?
Faith is part of the record, but spirituality here is best understood as Tems’s personal lens rather than a prescription for every listener. In Apple Music’s album notes, she says “Me & U” is about reconnecting with God, her inner child and the truth. Those ideas make the song’s search inward feel at once religious and intimate.
#1 Best Overall
Rolling Stone hears spiritual concerns that are sometimes specifically Christian and sometimes open enough to resonate beyond one faith. That is a critic’s interpretation, not a claim that all the songs share the same theology. The album’s spiritual character also comes from its insistence on inner life: survival, self-trust, difficult choices and growth are treated as consequential, not merely as plot points.
How do the songs turn those ideas into a personal story?
The album’s emotional range keeps its central theme from becoming abstract. Tems’s own descriptions of several songs connect private experience to distinct moments of pressure, release and choice.
Visibility and pressure
Tems says “Burning” looks back at how quickly early popularity arrived. She describes discomfort with attention alongside the realization that other people, too, are carrying inner battles. The song’s perspective complicates a simple success narrative: recognition can be exhilarating without making the person receiving it feel entirely at ease.

Love and boundaries
In her notes, Tems frames “Free Fall” as recognizing when a relationship has reached its limit and leaving before it becomes harmful. “Unfortunate” turns disappointment toward relief and self-trust. Together, the songs place agency in the decision to stop trying to preserve what no longer serves you.
Heritage and joy
“Love Me JeJe” offers a brighter counterweight. Tems describes it as a happy song about unconditional love, and Apple Music notes that it interpolates Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 song of the same name. The connection makes the track a musical nod to Nigerian popular music as well as a statement of affection.
What does the album sound like?
Born in the Wild moves through Afrobeats and Nigerian alté, R&B and soul, with highlife, amapiano, dance music and hip-hop also in the mix. The range is not simply a list of styles: it reflects an artist who does not want one label to stand in for her whole sound. As Tems puts it in the GRAMMY.com interview, “Some people call me R&B, some people call me alternative, some people call me Afrobeats.”

The Guardian hears a Nigerian aesthetic that sits comfortably alongside US soul and R&B. Rolling Stone, meanwhile, describes a palette stretching from stripped-down ballads and 1990s R&B to highlife, amapiano and rugged hip-hop, and points to Tems’s rap performance on “T-Unit.” These are critical descriptions of the album’s sound, not a claim that it belongs to one genre alone.
Some pairings make that range especially tangible. Apple Music’s album notes describe “Get It Right,” featuring Asake, as blending Afrobeats and amapiano. The album’s Nigerian identity is not an obstacle to its global conversation with R&B and soul; it is part of what gives that conversation its character.

Apple Music lists Born in the Wild at 18 songs and 54 minutes, with a June 6, 2024 catalog date. The Guardian and NME published their reviews on June 7, 2024; the one-day difference reflects catalog dating versus review publication, not necessarily a disagreement about when the album appeared.

The scale suits an album built as a broad self-portrait: it has room for faith, relationships, visibility, heritage and stylistic shifts. But breadth has a cost. The Guardian says the record runs a little long, while Rolling Stone argues that 18 tracks are too many to engage with fully and that some could have been cut. That reservation matters because the album’s strongest moments can lose definition when a listener is asked to absorb so many modes in one sitting.
NME’s June 7 review synopsis characterizes the album as soulful, spiritual and self-assured, with a fluid approach to genre that reflects West African musical diversity. The overall critical tension is therefore not whether Tems has a coherent identity, but whether the album’s generous scope sustains attention from beginning to end.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verdict: a compelling spiritual self-portrait, with a pacing caveat
Born in the Wild makes its case through the openness of Tems’s story and the distinct musical worlds she brings into it. Its spirituality is most persuasive when grounded in her own account of God, truth, survival and self-acceptance—not treated as a universal meaning listeners must share. The album’s length softens its momentum, but its range and Nigerian musical identity give the journey substance beyond a simple triumph narrative.
