But the return-to-form verdict depends on what you last played: lapsed fans have more to gain than players coming directly from a recent entry, and several modes remain familiar.

Does ICE-Q make the hockey better?
ICE-Q is the central gameplay change, but its announced features and its on-ice effect are different kinds of evidence. EA describes four components: Next-Gen Vision Control, Empowered AI, Reactive Actions and Skill Based One-Timers. The official ICE-Q feature page explains the intended mechanics; it is a product description, not an independent assessment of how well they work.
- Vision Control is presented as a way to orient and maneuver a player with more control over where they face.
- Empowered AI is intended to make computer-controlled teammates more aware of positioning and context.
- Reactive Actions cover more responsive player reactions and animations.
- Skill Based One-Timers make one-timers more dependent on execution rather than treating every opportunity as equivalent.
In its review description, GamingBolt identifies gameplay as the area of greatest improvement, pointing to AI reactions and positioning, tunable gameplay settings, improved animations and subtle simulation changes. That supports calling the on-ice changes meaningful, while leaving the overall judgment to the player: a system’s feature list alone cannot establish that every match feels transformed.

What does Franchise add?
Franchise is the game’s most concrete improvement away from the rink. EA’s Franchise Mode deep dive describes a revised hub and a wider set of records and management tools. Players can consult past-season box scores, individual game logs, split statistics and player award histories. Those details make it easier to follow a club’s history and evaluate individual performance.
Management also gets additional contract considerations, conversation-based negotiations and roster-management changes. Together, the information and tools make Franchise more useful to people who enjoy running a team rather than simply playing its games. These are meaningful additions, though they do not by themselves establish a wholesale redesign of the mode.

- ICE-Q - This is true hockey intelligence. Built on an all-new logic-driven animation system, ICE-Q responds to contextual events on the ice with unprecedented authenticity and is the foundation of Chel’s gameplay overhaul.
- SKILL BASED ONE-TIMERS – Skill Based One-Timers create authentic gameplay tension as offensive excitement and expectation mix with defensive concern and anticipation, each pass creating unique moments and opportunities for high-scoring probability shots.
- GRUDGE MATCH - Hockey is at its best when the competition is fierce. The all-new Grudge Match System tracks the history of matchups between teams across all major online and offline modes in NHL 25 to add more context, stakes and heat to showdowns with your rivals.
- NEXT-GEN CHARACTERS - The next best thing to the real thing. Thanks to the introduction of Sapien Technology to the NHL franchise and the power of our Frostbite Engine on next-gen consoles, all of NHL 25’s in-game characters have received a serious visual overhaul.
How much has presentation and the rest of the game changed?
Presentation adds features aimed at making games and rivalries feel more contextual. EA’s presentation overview lists Grudge Match tracking for matchups across online and offline play, Impact Players, context-sensitive cinematics and commentary, SAPIEN character-likeness updates, and an Infinite Camera System for varied replay angles. These additions broaden the broadcast-style framing, but the documented features are not evidence that every visual or audio element has been rebuilt.
Other modes receive targeted changes rather than a clean-sheet overhaul:

- With Exhaust Engine, sustained pressure in the attack zone leads to new game-changing effects, like goalie fatigue that slows the netminder’s reaction time the more they get worn down with offensive action
- Change the momentum with Physics-Based Contact as you break the glass and send players into the bench with big body checks
- Get unparalleled player command with the new Vision Passing System and Total Control Skill Moves
- Stay connected more than ever with cross-play in all online team play modes
- HUT Moments lets you recreate classic moments in hockey history and today’s biggest plays
- Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) adds Wildcard competitions with changing rulesets. XP progression is shared across Squad Battles, Rivals and Wild Card.
- World of Chel gets a revised Live Events structure.
- Arcade mode returns to the franchise; EA says it had not appeared since 2017.
- Be A Pro is among the modes GamingBolt describes as stale, a reminder that additions elsewhere do not make every part of the package feel new.
Is NHL 25 a return to form?
“Returns to form” is a reasonable verdict if it means the series has made visible progress in core gameplay and improved the information available to Franchise players. It is not a claim that every mode is revitalized or that the game is a must-buy for anyone with the previous release.
GamingBolt’s review description captures that tension: it praises gameplay improvements but says the game feels close to recent entries and calls Franchise and Be A Pro stale. It recommends the game more readily to people who skipped the last few releases than to those who played the most recent ones. That is one outlet’s assessment, not evidence of a review-score consensus. A Reddit discussion from a returning fan likewise illustrates the practical question—what changed enough to explain a positive impression—but is anecdotal rather than a measure of broader opinion.

- A completely overhauled AI player system heightens CPU skaters’ awareness of other players & positioning on the ice, giving them more fluid & helpful reads to execute in a true-to-life fashion, keeping your tactics in motion during high-paced action

Who should consider buying it?
- If you skipped several NHL games: ICE-Q, the Franchise records and management tools, and mode updates give you a clearer set of changes to explore.
- If you played a recent entry: weigh the gameplay improvements against the familiar feel and stale modes noted by GamingBolt. The case rests more on wanting the latest on-ice changes than on expecting a completely different game.
- If Franchise is your priority: the added historical stats, player records and negotiation tools are the most specific reason to look at this year’s version.
- If you mainly want a new career or mode experience: the available evidence does not support expecting every mode to have been substantially rebuilt.
