In her June 24, 2024 Rolling Stone review, Brittany Spanos argues that Gracie Abrams expands her intimate heartbreak pop on The Secret of Us with stronger hooks and a brighter, more buoyant sound. The shift is most striking in “Close to You,” but brooding songs remain central: the album widens Abrams’s range rather than leaving her sad-girl writing behind.
What does The Secret of Us sound like?
Spanos describes the second album as folky pop, with songwriting that sharpens some of the clichés and adolescent metaphors of Abrams’s debut. Her case for a step forward is not that every song breaks new ground; it is that the record gives Abrams more melodic and stylistic room while retaining the close-up emotional writing that defines her work.

“Felt Good About You” and “Risk” help establish the album’s buoyant side. “Close to You” makes the clearest stylistic leap, turning toward synth-pop. Against that brighter palette, “Blowing Smoke” and “us.” featuring Taylor Swift keep the record’s brooding center in view. Spanos also points to “Tough Love” as a more dynamic, friend-centered direction.
Is it more upbeat than Good Riddance?
In Spanos’s reading, The Secret of Us has a broader and more buoyant pop palette, but “more upbeat” is only a partial description. Its hooks and synth-pop moments suggest a more extroverted direction; the heartbroken, intimate songs remain essential to its identity. The review’s “next level” claim is about range, not a wholesale change of mood.

How does the review make its case?
Spanos’s central judgment is that Abrams’s writing has developed alongside the album’s expanded sound. She writes: “The folky-pop LP is a proper showcase of Abrams’ songwriting, sharpening up some of the clichés and adolescent metaphors from her debut.” That is one critic’s assessment of the record, not a claim of universal consensus.
Which physical edition has more tracks?
The official Gracie Abrams store lists a 13-track standard vinyl LP and a deluxe CD with 17 tracks. The deluxe CD listing adds four songs after the standard album sequence; the cited product pages do not establish that every format or regional edition shares those tracklists.
