On Romance, Fontaines D.C. set apocalyptic unease against a stubborn belief in devotion. Leah Lu’s Rolling Stone Canada review hears the band widening its sound while keeping love at the center—not as an answer that erases the world’s dangers, but as something worth choosing within them.
What is Fontaines D.C.’s Romance about?
Released in August 2024 through XL Recordings, Romance is the band’s fourth album and its first produced by James Ford, according to Domino Publishing. Its title suggests intimacy, but the album’s emotional setting is uneasy: dread and dystopian atmosphere press in, while the songs keep returning to the possibility that love and devotion still matter.
In her Rolling Stone Canada review, Leah Lu reads that tension as the record’s central idea. The album does not promise that romance will fix everything. Instead, its idealism feels like a response to anxiety: a way of insisting on connection when the surrounding world seems to be coming apart.
How does the album expand the band’s sound?
Lu describes Romance as expansive and difficult to pin to one genre, a shift from the post-punk reputation often associated with Fontaines D.C. The contrast between two songs makes the range especially clear in her reading:

- Irish indie rock sensation Fontaines D.C. return with new album ROMANCE, their debut on XL Recordings, out on August 23rd. Recorded shortly after their tour supporting Arctic Monkeys, it seizes on the momentum of 2022’s Skinty Fia, which firmly established them as one of today’s most exciting rock bands. ROMANCE represents a bold sonic and stylistic evolution for the band and lead single “Starburster” (out April 17) shows the band at their most electrifying to date, as Chatten’s swaggering stream of consciousness collides with explosive production...

| Song | How the review characterizes it | What the contrast shows |
|---|---|---|
| “Starburster” | Brash, rap-rock energy | A forceful, rhythm-driven edge |
| “Favourite” | Dream-pop softness | A gentler, more atmospheric side |
These descriptions are the critic’s account of the album’s palette, not definitive genre labels for the band. Their value is in the contrast: the record moves between sharply different moods rather than settling into a single familiar lane.
Why does Romance feel cinematic?
Lu hears the songs as small dramatic worlds. Fictional characters, writing that can feel like a monologue, layered vocals and instrumental textures all contribute to a cinematic effect. The songs can seem less like straightforward diary entries than scenes inhabited by voices and characters.

The title track opens the album and introduces devotion through this broader lens. Its brief lyric, “Maybe romance is a place/For me/And you,” frames romance as somewhere to reach or dwell, rather than merely a passing feeling. That image fits the review’s interpretation of the record as searching for intimacy amid unease.
What does “Horseness Is The Whatness” add to the album’s argument?
In Lu’s reading, “Horseness Is The Whatness” brings the tension between love and choice into focus. The song asks, in effect, whether love is something people discover or something they decide to sustain. That question keeps the album’s romantic idealism from feeling effortless: devotion matters precisely because the surrounding conditions are uncertain.

Lu also reports that Grian Chatten, recalling a five-year-old Reddit AMA, said Arthur Rimbaud’s poem “Romance” “does a similar thing to me as some of [Bob] Dylan’s early lyrics.” This is a statement relayed in her feature, not a new interview for the review.

If you want a record that stays within one version of Fontaines D.C.’s post-punk sound, the stylistic shifts Lu describes may be the point of friction. If you are drawn to albums that put contrasting textures in service of a coherent emotional question, Romance offers a compelling listen: its brash and delicate moments share an interest in how people hold on to one another under pressure.
