The Municipal Archive of Reus received the Felip Font Montaner Collection on 5 October 2026. The transfer brings together business records documenting the Font family’s 18th- and 19th-century trade in silk fabrics and spirits, alongside textile samples, a commercial seal and family photographs. The collection’s contents and historical significance are described in an announcement by Reus City Council.

What is in the Felip Font Montaner Collection?

The collection is named for Felip Font Montaner and centers on records of the Font family’s commercial activity. Reus City Council lists accounting books, invoice books, commercial registers, bills of exchange, indexes of suppliers and customers, and business correspondence. The written records are accompanied by samples of fabric and silk thread, a commercial seal, and family photographs. Reus City Council’s 5 October 2026 announcement describes the transfer and its contents.

The transfer agreement was signed by Montserrat Flores Juanpere, the councilor for Good Governance, Transparency and Participation, and Dolors Blasco Font de Rubinat, the transferor.

What did the Font family trade?

The city describes Felip Font Montaner’s main occupation as a veler, a maker and trader of scarves and silk fabrics. He also took part in the spirits trade. The combination of accounts, invoices, commercial registers and surviving textile samples offers several kinds of evidence about the business, but the announcement does not provide figures that would establish the relative scale of silk and spirits trading.

What can the business records reveal about Reus trade?

According to the municipal announcement, the documents can illuminate how the family organized its business and dealt with suppliers, customers and commercial correspondents. The city highlights correspondence and trade connections with European markets, particularly Holland and France, as well as exports of spirits from Reus. The announcement identifies these as research potential; it does not present a completed analysis of the records or quantify the trade.

The fabric and silk-thread samples, together with the commercial seal, add material evidence to the written records. The city presents the collection as useful for studying Reus’s economic and commercial history, international trade networks, spirits exports and the contribution of family businesses to the city’s development.

Why are the photographs a separate historical window?

The photographs mainly relate to the family’s social and domestic life in the first decades of the 20th century and are chiefly associated with Pau Font de Rubinat. Their date range is distinct from that of the business papers, which the city presents as documenting commercial activity in the 18th and 19th centuries. The photographs therefore add a later family-history dimension rather than extending the stated dates of the business records.

Can the collection be consulted or viewed online?

The 5 October 2026 announcement does not say whether the collection has been catalogued, digitized or opened for consultation, and it provides no inventory, finding aid or researcher access instructions. It says the Municipal Archive will soon devote an issue in its publication collection to studying the Felip Font Montaner Collection, but gives no title, publication date, format or ordering details. Readers seeking access should check with the Municipal Archive of Reus for current arrangements.
