The preview showed LeAnn Rimes moved to tears and drew praise from Kate Miller-Heidke and Guy Sebastian. De Melo went on to win the 2024 season, with the victory reported on 27 October.
What the first-look teaser showed
PerthNow published its preview on 29 July 2024, before the season began airing. It introduced De Melo as a WA mine worker from Perth and a father-of-two, and revealed his audition song: Ed Sheeran’s “I See Fire.” PerthNow’s first-look report framed the performance as a preview, not a report on how far he would progress.

The coaches named in the story were LeAnn Rimes, Kate Miller-Heidke, Guy Sebastian and Adam Lambert. The teaser report said Rimes was brought to tears. Miller-Heidke told De Melo, “You sang that better than Ed Sheeran.” Sebastian praised the emotional effect of the performance, calling it one of his favourite auditions he had heard on the show. TV Tonight’s 30 July coverage also described the promo and listed the same coaching panel.
What happened after the preview
The July story’s question about how far De Melo would go was answered later in the season: he won The Voice Australia 2024. WAM reported the win on 27 October 2024, and Seven’s 7NEWS also covered the result. WAM’s report and 7NEWS’ coverage provide the completed-season context missing from the teaser.

De Melo’s background beyond the audition
A PerthNow profile published on 20 August 2024 added more personal context. De Melo described beginning his musical journey after the death of a close friend: “When he passed away, I sang at his wake and that sort of set my music journey and fuelled my passion for music.” The recollection is his own account, as reported in PerthNow’s later profile.
The family detail also changed between reports. The July first-look described him as a father-of-two; by the August profile, after the birth of his third child, PerthNow called him a father-of-three. Those descriptions refer to different dates rather than a contradiction in the original preview.

A later publishing announcement
On 11 March 2025, WAM reported that Perfect Pitch Publishing had announced an exclusive global licensing agreement with De Melo. That is a dated announcement; the report does not establish the agreement’s current terms. WAM’s March 2025 announcement is the source for that development.
