Restreamer vs OBS for Looping Prerecorded Videos on YouTube

OBS loops a local video with Media Source; hosted Restream Upload & Stream can schedule a limited loop. Learn how datarhei Restreamer differs and what YouTube requires.

For looping a prerecorded video from a computer you control, OBS is the more direct documented option: add the file as a Media Source and switch on Loop. For scheduled playback hosted away from your computer, Restream’s Upload & Stream feature supports looping, but it is paid and has limits. “Restreamer” can also mean datarhei Restreamer, a separate self-hosted product; its cited YouTube guide explains how to publish a stream, but does not document a loop control.

Which option fits your YouTube stream?

Option Where playback runs What the documentation says about looping Best fit
OBS Studio On the computer running OBS Media Source repeats a file when Loop is enabled. VLC Video is a separate source for playlists and has its own Loop Playlist setting. Local playback, scene control, and a single file or playlist when you can keep the computer and encoder running.
datarhei Restreamer On your self-hosted streaming server The cited YouTube guide documents publishing to YouTube, but does not describe a looping control. That documentation gap does not establish that looping is impossible. A self-hosted publication workflow, after confirming the current product documentation for your source and playback needs.
Restream Upload & Stream Hosted by Restream A single video can loop up to 10 times, with a maximum resulting stream duration of 40 hours. Playlists do not automatically loop; the documented workaround is to duplicate entries, up to 40 videos. Uploading and scheduling prerecorded events when you do not want to keep a local encoder computer running.
StreamNeo Hosted in the cloud Loops uploaded videos and playlists for an always-on YouTube stream. #1 for an always-on cloud stream: any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free.

Restream’s documented loop and duration limits are from its Help Center article dated March 11, 2026; its Upload & Stream overview is dated July 25, 2026. Plan eligibility, storage, and product limits can change, so confirm them before building a scheduled workflow around the service. See Restream’s looping instructions and Upload & Stream overview.

Loop a video in OBS

OBS sends its encoder output to YouTube; it does not host playback for you. Your computer, OBS, and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue. In OBS, Media Source’s Loop option is off by default, so check it rather than assuming a file will repeat. OBS lists support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, but that list is not a guarantee that every file will play correctly on every computer.

  1. Prepare YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and copy its stream key and stream URL. First-time live access may take up to 24 hours to enable; YouTube also requires channel verification and no livestream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  2. Choose or create an OBS scene. Open OBS and select the scene you will use. Add a source with the + button in the Sources dock, choose Media Source, and create a new source.
  3. Select the recording and enable looping. In Media Source properties, choose the local video file and turn on Loop. Confirm the file plays in the OBS preview before going live. The OBS Project’s Media Sources guide documents the source and its Loop property.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and connect the YouTube account or select the custom streaming service workflow. For the latter, enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  5. Check the preview, then start. Start streaming in OBS and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview for picture and sound before confirming the event is live. Monitor both OBS and YouTube during the broadcast.

Looping a playlist instead of one file

OBS’s Media Source is for a file. For a playlist, add the distinct VLC Video source; VLC must be installed for that source to appear. Add the playlist files in its properties and enable Loop Playlist. Test transitions and audio levels before the live event, since playlist behavior and playback depend on the local setup.

Use datarhei Restreamer to publish to YouTube

datarhei Restreamer is not the same product as Restream Upload & Stream. Its cited YouTube guide covers a self-hosted server’s publication workflow. It does not establish how to configure repeating playback, so confirm the current Restreamer documentation for the source and loop behavior you need.

  1. In Restreamer, open Publication Service and choose the YouTube publication service.
  2. Enter a valid YouTube streaming ID, then save the publication settings.
  3. Start the stream and check the Restreamer window for the connected YouTube Live bitrate.
  4. After the event, end the stream on YouTube first. The guide warns that interrupting it in Restreamer may prevent YouTube from saving the live stream to the DVR archive.

The datarhei YouTube guide was last updated approximately in 2023, so treat it as a dated workflow reference.

Schedule a loop with Restream Upload & Stream

Restream Upload & Stream is a hosted prerecorded-event feature, not datarhei Restreamer. Restream says you can upload a video or use a recording, schedule it as a prerecorded event, and stream while away from your computer. Its loop feature is paid. Check your account’s current plan eligibility and storage before relying on it.

  • A single video can play up to 10 times; the resulting stream can be no longer than 40 hours.
  • A playlist does not automatically loop. Restream’s documented workaround is to duplicate playlist entries, up to 40 videos.

These are Restream product limits stated in its March 11, 2026 looping article; they are not general YouTube limits.

Check YouTube readiness, connection, and content rights

Eligibility, preview, and archiving

YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the stream URL and key in the encoder; starting the encoder creates a watch page. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For longer streams, do not assume the entire event will be saved as an archive. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Network headroom and monitoring

YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, and warns that network disruption can break a stream. Test the setup, check the preview, and monitor the broadcast rather than treating a successful start as a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. A wired connection is a reasonable option when available; YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a particular cable category. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Copyright and monetization are separate checks

Only stream recordings you have the necessary rights to use. A video repeating successfully does not by itself make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policy applies to live streams and warns that highly repetitive or mass-produced content with little creative, educational, or other value may be ineligible. It does not say that every loop is prohibited or automatically monetizable. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common looping problems

  • The OBS video stops at the end. Open Media Source properties and enable Loop; it is off by default. For a playlist, use VLC Video and its Loop Playlist option instead.
  • VLC Video is missing in OBS. Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS so the source is available. If you only need one file, Media Source does not require the VLC playlist source.
  • YouTube does not show a preview. Check the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm the encoder is running, and check the Live Control Room. Verify channel live-stream eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time access to become available.
  • The stream disconnects or buffers. Check upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Test the network, use a wired connection if practical, and monitor the encoder and YouTube preview.
  • A Restream loop stops earlier than expected. Check that looping is available on the current paid plan and account, and that the video is within the 10-play and 40-hour limits. For a playlist, duplicate entries manually; automatic playlist looping is not documented by Restream’s loop article.
  • A YouTube archive is missing or incomplete. Streams over 12 hours are not covered by YouTube’s stated automatic-archive behavior for streams under 12 hours. With datarhei Restreamer, end the stream in YouTube first, as the cited guide warns that stopping it in Restreamer may prevent DVR archiving.

Or let it run in the cloud
