If your Restream stream is stuck on “Connecting,” check the YouTube channel and event first, then reconnect YouTube, test a direct stream, and only then change network or encoder settings. The point is to locate which link is failing: YouTube eligibility, Restream authorization, the encoder-to-Restream connection, or your network.
Start with the YouTube channel and event
Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the YouTube channel. Restream says a channel must be phone verified and, when enabling live streaming for the first time, wait 24 hours before streaming. These are YouTube eligibility steps, not encoder settings. See Restream’s YouTube setup guidance.
Check how the event was created, too. Restream warns that an event created through YouTube’s mobile app is for mobile streaming only; trying to send an external stream through Restream to that event can fail. Create or select an event that accepts an external encoder instead.
Reconnect YouTube to Restream
If the channel previously worked but now fails, its authorization or stream key may be stale. Restream’s documented recovery sequence is:

- Remove the YouTube channel from your Restream account.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the stream settings for the intended event; reset the stream key.
- Return to Restream and add the YouTube channel again.
- Retry the stream using the intended event and channel.
Resetting a key invalidates the old key, so update any encoder or saved configuration that relies on it. Follow Restream’s YouTube troubleshooting instructions for the channel reconnection process.
Test YouTube without Restream
Try going live on YouTube directly, without Restream. If that also fails, the problem may be with YouTube eligibility, the event, or YouTube’s service rather than the Restream connection. If the direct test continues to fail, Restream advises contacting YouTube support. If it works directly, focus next on Restream authorization, the encoder connection, and the network path.

Check the relevant network path
If Restream itself remains at “Connecting” or times out, a firewall, network rule, or web security gateway may be blocking the selected streaming method. The ports differ by path; ask your network administrator to check only the ones relevant to your setup.

Verify OBS account, stream, and server
If you send OBS to Restream, make sure OBS is using the intended Restream account and stream. Restream supports connecting by authorizing the account or by entering a Restream RTMP stream key manually. In OBS, confirm the selected service and server; Restream says the server can be autodetected or selected manually. A wrong account, stream card, key, or server can leave the encoder pointed at the wrong destination.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
- Confirm the service/account or manually entered Restream key belongs to the intended Restream stream.
- Check the server selection; use autodetect or the appropriate server listed for your setup.
- Apply the settings and retry before making unrelated encoder changes.

Match encoder settings to YouTube and your upload speed
Restream lists H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommendations. Its guidance says two seconds is recommended and four seconds is the maximum. These settings help ensure the encoder output is suitable for YouTube; they cannot fix a disabled channel, unsupported mobile-created event, invalid authorization, or blocked network path.
Use a bitrate appropriate for both the resolution/frame rate and the upload connection. Restream’s YouTube bitrate table lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Restream recommends that the bitrate not exceed half of the available upload speed, so a 12 Mbps setting calls for at least 24 Mbps of sustained upload capacity under that rule. - Set rate control to CBR and keyframes to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate whose recommended bitrate your connection can sustain.
- If upload capacity is marginal or fluctuating, lower the bitrate or video quality and retry.
Use Ethernet if the connection is unstable
Restream recommends Ethernet where available as a stability measure. A wired connection can help with an unstable Wi-Fi link, but it will not correct YouTube eligibility, an incompatible event, a bad stream key, or incorrect OBS account settings.
