For a blurry YouTube livestream relayed through Restream, first check what your encoder is actually sending, then compare it with YouTube’s live-stream bitrate recommendations and your available upload bandwidth. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, and 8 Mbps for either 720p30 or 720p60. A higher target helps only if your connection can sustain it; YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom.
Start by checking the encoded stream, not just the canvas
Your encoder’s canvas or source resolution does not necessarily match its encoded output. Check the output settings for resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval. YouTube’s live guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the source and the connection. More motion and a higher frame rate generally need more bitrate to preserve comparable detail. Raising resolution or bitrate cannot restore detail absent from the source, and an unstable high-bitrate feed can look worse than a lower setting that stays consistent.
Use YouTube’s live bitrate table for your codec
These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingestion bitrates, not separate recommendations for uploading a finished video. Select the row matching both your output resolution and frame rate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Codec | 720p30 | 720p60 | 1080p30 | 1080p60 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 8 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 6 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Confirm which codec the encoder is sending before using a number. YouTube’s guidance may change; check its current table if you are configuring a different resolution, frame rate, or codec.
Make sure the upload connection can sustain the target
Measure upload speed, not download speed, under conditions similar to the broadcast. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Other devices, services, or network activity can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.

If the connection fluctuates or the stream reports health problems, lower the bitrate first. If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate and test again. Restream’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking upload capacity and server selection, avoiding unusual or unsupported settings, and adjusting bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or encoder preset when stability is poor. Its cited minimums of 1.5 Mbps for 720p and 3 Mbps for 1080p are troubleshooting thresholds, not substitutes for YouTube’s recommended targets. See Restream’s encoder-quality troubleshooting guide.
Test the stream and read its health information
- Use representative material. Test with motion and audio similar to the real broadcast; a static screen may not reveal problems that appear during fast movement.
- Check the outgoing encoder settings. Confirm the actual output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval rather than relying on the project or canvas settings.
- Review YouTube stream health and messages. Look for signs that the incoming stream is unstable or mismatched. Do not diagnose quality from a single viewer’s playback alone.
- Change one setting at a time. After each change, check stream health and playback again. This makes it easier to tell whether the change helped.
Tell relay quality apart from YouTube playback
Restream describes its ordinary relay as passing the incoming stream through without modifying it. YouTube, by contrast, transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions. A difference between a Restream-side preview and YouTube playback does not by itself establish that Restream degraded the stream. Compare the encoder’s output, Restream’s view if available, YouTube’s stream-health information, and YouTube’s available playback quality options. The actual cause cannot be determined without observing the particular stream. See Restream’s explanation of platform-specific quality and YouTube’s live-stream guidance.

When Restream transcoding may be relevant
Restream documents an optional, separately purchased transcoding add-on for changing output settings per channel. Its documented maximum output is 1920×1080 at 6,000 Kbps video and 60 fps, with audio up to 320 Kbps; Restream reports an average added delay of two to three seconds. These are the add-on’s stated limits, not a cure for blur: transcoding cannot restore detail already lost in the incoming feed or fix an unstable encoder connection. It may be relevant when destinations need different outputs. See Restream’s transcoding documentation.
Common causes and fixes
- The picture is soft everywhere: Check source quality and the encoder’s actual output resolution. A high-resolution canvas will not help if the encoded output is set lower.
- Detail breaks up or quality fluctuates: Check upload capacity and stream-health messages. Lower the bitrate or reduce resolution or frame rate until the connection is stable.
- The encoder and YouTube show different quality: Compare the outgoing settings and YouTube playback quality options. YouTube transcodes live video, so the difference alone does not identify Restream as the cause.
- The configured bitrate seems right, but the result is poor: Verify the codec and frame-rate row in YouTube’s live table, then check CBR and the keyframe interval.
- Only one destination needs a different output: Consider whether per-channel transcoding fits the destination requirements, accounting for its documented output limits and added delay.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your use case is a prerecorded video or playlist running continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
