Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your Restream YouTube stream has no sound, first find where the audio disappears: play the source file, watch the encoder’s audio meter, check its local recording, read YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, and test playback on another device. A silent local recording points to the source or encoder setup; a recording with sound but a silent live stream points to the outgoing audio track, delivery, or a platform mute.
First identify where the sound disappears
“Pre-recorded video” can mean a video uploaded and scheduled through Restream or a media file played through an external encoder such as OBS. The checks below apply to either workflow, but the precise controls differ. The available Restream guidance covers encoder streams; it does not establish the current file-format or scheduling requirements for Restream’s separate upload-and-schedule feature.
- Play the original video. Confirm that the audio is audible in the file itself, not just expected to be there.
- Watch the encoder meter or preview while the video plays. If using an encoder, check whether its audio meter moves and whether the preview has sound. Restream recommends checking the encoder meter and comparing a local recording with the outgoing stream. Restream’s no-audio guide describes the meter as an indicator that an audio source is being picked up.
- Make a short local recording. Compare its sound with the original file and the encoder preview.
- Check the YouTube event. In Live Control Room, read the stream-health messages and preview playback.
- Test another playback device. If another device has sound, the issue may be the original viewer’s player, browser, or device settings rather than the stream.
Write down whether the event started, whether YouTube shows it, whether the encoder preview and local recording have sound, and whether the silence affects all viewers or only one device. That pattern determines which checks to follow.
Check the source file and encoder audio track
If the source file or local recording is silent
Focus on the media source and its setup. Verify that the operating system or encoder can access the intended file or audio device. In the encoder, confirm that the source is selected, enabled, unmuted, and routed to the audio track being recorded and sent. Play the video while watching the meter: no movement suggests the encoder is not receiving audio from that source.

If the file itself is silent, the streaming service cannot restore sound that is not present in the source. If the file plays with sound but the local recording does not, inspect the encoder’s source selection, mute state, and track routing before changing YouTube settings.
If the local recording has sound but YouTube does not
The source and at least part of the encoder path are working. Check that the audio track present in the recording is also enabled on the encoder’s live output. Then inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages and test the outbound connection as described below.

Restream notes that some platforms may mute content after detecting copyright issues. Treat that as one possible explanation only when there is evidence from the platform; do not assume copyright muting just because the live stream is silent.
Read YouTube Live Control Room’s audio diagnostics
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect its health or error messages. YouTube documents ingestion messages for a stream with no audio, multiple audio streams, an unsupported audio codec, and an incorrect sample rate. These messages help distinguish a missing encoder track from an audio format YouTube does not accept.

- No audio: Check the encoder’s audio-on setting and confirm that an audio source is actually being sent.
- Multiple audio streams: YouTube says to supply only one audio stream. Check whether the encoder is sending more than one.
- Unsupported codec or incorrect sample rate: Compare the outgoing audio settings with the encoder’s available options and the guidance for your workflow.
Restream’s YouTube setup guide recommends AAC or MP3 audio, 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround, and a 44.1 KHz sample rate for stereo or 48 KHz for 5.1 surround. These are recommendations in Restream’s guide, not a guarantee that every encoder exposes identical controls. See Restream’s YouTube stream setup guidance.
Compare encoder output, recording, and connection
YouTube recommends checking how the stream looks and sounds directly in the encoder. If the encoder output or local archive is also faulty, investigate the audio and video sources, encoder errors, and CPU load. If the encoder preview and local archive sound healthy but YouTube playback does not, test the outbound internet connection and review YouTube’s ingestion diagnostics.

For a planned broadcast, YouTube advises setting up encoders two hours before the event and starting them 15 minutes before it. Preview the event in Live Control Room before starting and monitor audio and video during the stream. YouTube’s guidance is to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” YouTube streaming tips.

If desktop playback works but mobile playback does not, mono compatibility or phase may be involved. YouTube documents that stereo audio with poor mono compatibility can be degraded or muted when a mobile device converts it to mono. Check the mix’s phase and test playback on the affected mobile device. YouTube’s streaming guidance covers audio quality monitoring.
Quick symptom-to-fix guide
| What you observe | Where to focus |
|---|---|
| The original file and local recording are silent | Source file, selected source, mute state, and encoder track routing. |
| The file has sound, but the encoder meter or preview does not | Whether the correct source is enabled and routed to the active audio track. |
| The local recording has sound, but the YouTube live stream does not | Outgoing audio track, YouTube ingestion messages, outbound connection, or a platform mute supported by an on-screen notice. |
| YouTube reports multiple audio streams, an unsupported codec, or a sample-rate error | Encoder output settings; send one audio stream and compare its codec and sample rate with the applicable guidance. |
| Only one viewer cannot hear the stream | Player, browser or app, device volume, and system sound settings. |
| Desktop has sound but mobile does not | Mono compatibility and phase in the stereo mix. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the underlying issue is keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not replace a camera-based live broadcast. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
