One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a YouTube stream sent through Restream, Restream recommends at least 10 Mbps upload and 25 Mbps or more—especially for Full HD. If you use an external encoder such as OBS, keep its video bitrate at or below half the upload speed you measure to a suitable Restream server. These are Restream recommendations, not guarantees of an uninterrupted connection.
How much upload speed do you need?
Restream’s general recommendation is a minimum upload speed of 10 Mbps, with 25 Mbps or higher recommended, especially for Full HD. These figures are Restream’s guidance, not universal YouTube minimums. Your encoder’s configured bitrate and the stability of the route to Restream also matter.
Upload speed is the capacity your connection can provide; stream bitrate is the data rate your encoder sends. Restream’s rule for an external encoder is to keep video bitrate no higher than half the measured upload speed. In practical terms, an 8 Mbps video bitrate calls for at least 16 Mbps upload under that rule; a 10 Mbps bitrate calls for at least 20 Mbps. These are arithmetic applications of Restream’s guidance, not separately published thresholds. Leave room for other network use and normal variation; Restream does not specify a universal extra-headroom percentage.
Choose bitrate for resolution and frame rate
Restream’s YouTube settings article gives these recommended video bitrates. The separate ranges in its settings guide are broader configuration ranges, not equivalent recommendations.

| Output | Restream recommended video bitrate | Restream Studio bitrate | Upload speed under the half-speed rule for an external encoder |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 6 Mbps | At least 20 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | Not listed in the Studio settings guidance | At least 24 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 5 Mbps | At least 12 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | At least 8 Mbps |
The upload values in the last column are calculated from Restream’s half-speed rule, not independent Restream minimums. Its separate settings guide gives a 3–8 Mbps range for 1080p30 and 4–10 Mbps for 1080p60. Treat those as ranges from that guide rather than substituting them for the recommendations above. See Restream’s YouTube bitrate settings and encoder settings.
Restream Studio or an external encoder?
Restream Studio
Studio adjusts bitrate automatically based on the quality you select. Its settings guidance describes 720p at 30 or 60 fps and 1080p at 30 fps; Full HD requires Professional or higher according to that article. Plan availability can change, so confirm current eligibility in your account. Studio’s listed bitrates are lower than some of the general YouTube recommendations above; do not assume the two figures describe the same encoding setup.

External encoder, such as OBS
With an external encoder, you choose the output settings. Restream says it does not change the quality selected in your streaming software, so make the encoder bitrate appropriate for both the intended output and your measured upload capacity.
- Use H.264 video, CBR rate control, and a 2-second keyframe interval; Restream lists 4 seconds as the maximum.
- Restream lists 240p–2160p resolution, up to 60 fps, and 3,000–40,000 Kbps video bitrate depending on resolution and frame rate. The full bitrate span is not appropriate for every output; choose a value for your actual settings.
- For audio, Restream lists AAC or MP3.
These are Restream’s YouTube connection settings, not a promise that every combination or connection will work reliably. See its encoder settings guide.

Test the connection before going live
- Run Restream’s speed test. Test two or three server locations, let each result settle, and note the locations with low ping and the strongest upload result.
- Select the Restream server with the best upload result, then compare that upload speed with your intended encoder bitrate using the half-speed rule.
- If the margin is too small, lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate before the broadcast rather than relying on a borderline test result.
- Prefer wired Ethernet for stability. Restream recommends a wired connection over Wi-Fi; it does not claim that Ethernet increases the upload capacity supplied by your ISP.
Fix an unstable or interrupted stream
- Bitrate exceeds the available margin: Compare the encoder bitrate with the speed-test result. Reduce bitrate or output quality until bitrate is no more than half the measured upload speed.
- Speed-test results are weak or inconsistent: Try another server location with a stronger upload result. Use a wired connection; if speeds remain low, reboot the modem or router and contact your ISP if the problem persists.
- The encoder reports dropped frames or the stream stalls: Check that the encoder settings are supported, then reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate. Also check whether the computer is overloaded.
- The stream disconnects despite a suitable speed result: A speed test is not a guarantee of continuous service. Check the connection and encoder, then reconnect if necessary. Restream’s guidance does not promise an uninterrupted connection at a particular speed.
Restream’s recommendations for wired connections, low-speed recovery, and encoder troubleshooting are in its equipment guidance and streaming troubleshooting article.
Does multistreaming through Restream require more upload?
Not for the same incoming stream: Restream says its servers replicate the stream to destination channels, so adding destinations does not require extra upload bandwidth from your connection. That describes Restream’s relay, not a way to send multiple separate high-bitrate feeds from your own encoder without additional bandwidth. See Restream’s multistreaming bandwidth explanation.

What “continuous” means for a YouTube broadcast
Restream says YouTube has no stated stream-duration limit, but archives only broadcasts under 12 hours. That archive limit matters if you want a recording of a long broadcast; it does not mean the connection itself is guaranteed to stay live. See Restream’s YouTube live streaming guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your continuous YouTube stream is prerecorded video rather than a live camera or encoder feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a home computer online: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube require 10 Mbps upload for every livestream?
No. The 10 Mbps minimum and 25 Mbps Full HD recommendation cited here are from Restream, not universal YouTube requirements.
Does a speed test guarantee that a 24/7 stream will never drop?
No. It measures upload performance to selected Restream servers at test time; it cannot guarantee future connection stability.
