What is Resident Evil 4 on PS5?
This is the 2023 remake of Capcom’s 2005 survival-horror game. Leon S. Kennedy is sent to a secluded European village after the US president’s daughter disappears. The hostile villagers, called Ganados, retain their intelligence and attack in groups, shaping a game that alternates horror sequences with more action-focused encounters. PlayStation describes the remake as a reimagining of the original and says new players do not need prior Resident Evil experience.

The distinction matters: the remake preserves the basic combat and resource loop, but substantially revises how the story is told and how Leon moves through its world. It aims to feel familiar in its decisions and pressures without simply reproducing the 2005 game scene for scene.
What has changed from the original?
PlayStation’s overview describes expanded dialogue, reimagined cutscenes, restructured layouts and more fluid movement. The knife has a larger role, supporting stealth kills, last-second escapes and parries. Weapon quick-swapping and crafting additional ammunition when the right items are available add options within encounters. The attaché-case inventory also returns, now with auto-sort, unlockable cases and charms.

Director Yasuhiro Ampo says the team modernized controls, story and characters while making only small changes to the original’s core aiming, shooting, resource management and weapon upgrades. That continuity is the remake’s central design trade-off: its larger structural and narrative revisions sit on top of a loop built around choosing when to fight, what to carry and how to spend scarce resources. The feature descriptions establish design intent, not a guarantee that every control or encounter will suit every player.
How does the PS5 version use the console?
The official PS5 listing offers a choice to prioritize frame rate or resolution and lists ray tracing support. It also identifies DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, plus radio communications played through the controller speaker. These are listed features; the page does not establish measured frame rates, image-quality differences between modes or which option performs better in particular scenes.
In a March 22, 2023 PlayStation Blog interview, Ampo describes vibration and reload sounds through the controller, with trigger resistance varying according to a gun’s weight. Sound director Hiroshi Tamura says the team used layered 3D audio in quieter sequences and object-based audio in combat, including sounds that can seem to come from behind a wall or from a floor above; he also says the music was produced and mixed in 7.1.4 channels. Art director Hirofumi Nakaoka describes using shadows, silhouettes, moving foliage and fog to build atmosphere. These are the creators’ accounts of the sound and visual design, not independent technical test results.

Is Resident Evil 4 scary, or mostly an action game?
It is designed as a survival-horror/action hybrid rather than a constant sequence of scares. PlayStation describes horror passages balanced with action, and the contrast is part of the game’s intended texture: tension and uncertainty give way to confrontations that demand quick choices. The villagers’ group attacks make combat a recurring pressure, while the atmosphere also comes from environmental details such as darkness, silhouettes and sound direction.
The available source material establishes that balance as a design goal, but does not support a claim that every player will find the game equally frightening. Players looking for unbroken horror may find the action emphasis too strong; those who prefer combat threaded through suspense may find the mixture more appealing.
Do you need to play other Resident Evil games first?
No. PlayStation’s FAQ says Resident Evil 4 can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of the series. The setup gives Leon a clear mission, and the remake provides its own story context. Familiarity with the franchise may add background, but it is not presented as a prerequisite.

What do critics think?
GameSpot’s March 17, 2023 review roundup reported an average of 93 from 88 reviews at that time, praising the horror-action balance, finely tuned gameplay and detailed world. That figure is a historical roundup snapshot, not a current aggregate and not a PS5-only score. GameSpot characterized the remake as a re-envisioning rather than a replication; its own base-game review is a separate critical assessment.
The cited reception supports the view that the remake’s changes were broadly welcomed by reviewers in 2023, but it does not answer platform-specific questions such as current patch behavior or measured PS5 performance.

Separate Ways
Separate Ways is a paid Ada Wong story running parallel to the main campaign. It follows her mission to retrieve the Amber, fills in questions from the main story and brings her into Leon’s path. Capcom’s Promotion Producer Edvin Edsö says Ada’s grappling gun can reach locations and attack enemies from a distance. The PlayStation Store listing gives its release date as September 21, 2023, and says it requires the 2023 base game.
The Mercenaries
Capcom says Ada Wong and Albert Wesker were added as playable characters in a free update to The Mercenaries for owners of Resident Evil 4. That free content is separate from the paid Separate Ways expansion.
VR Mode
PS VR2 is required for the VR features; it is not required for the ordinary PS5 campaign. Capcom says VR Mode adapts the base game’s story and is incompatible with both Separate Ways and The Mercenaries. PlayStation also identifies PS VR2 as the requirement for VR features on its product page. A headset is therefore an optional way to experience the base story, not a prerequisite for playing the standard game.

Which PS5 edition should you buy?
The US PlayStation page currently presents a Gold Edition that includes Resident Evil 4, the Extra DLC Pack and Separate Ways. Because storefront offers, prices and bundle contents can change—and regional stores can differ—check the live listing for your region before buying. The separate expansion listing confirms that Separate Ways requires the 2023 base game.
If you want only the campaign, compare the base-game offer with the bundle in your region. If you want Ada’s parallel story, confirm that the edition includes Separate Ways or budget for it separately. Choose VR Mode only if you have PS VR2 and specifically want to play the base story in VR; the regular campaign does not require that headset.
Verdict: is Resident Evil 4 on PS5 worth playing?
For players who want a substantial survival-horror campaign with meaningful action, the 2023 remake offers a deliberate balance: it retains the original’s resource-and-combat foundations while reworking its presentation, layouts, movement and knife mechanics. PS5-specific features are clearly listed, and the game is accessible to newcomers; the main buying decision is whether the base campaign is enough or whether you also want the separate Ada story. The available evidence does not establish comparative PS5 performance, so choose a display priority based on preference rather than an assumed measured advantage.
