Resham Firiri is a Nepali folk song associated with Pokhara in western Nepal. It is known for a lilting refrain and a sequence of unexpected images: a dog and a cat, lovers waiting at a crossroads, a hunter aiming at a deer, and a calf near a precipice. Its composer and first recording date remain disputed. Reported accounts say it is sung in Nepal and in Nepali-speaking communities in parts of India and Bhutan, and they describe versions by musicians associated with Japan and South Korea.
What the song is
Resham Firiri is a folk song from Pokhara, the lakeside city in western Nepal. The UNESCO-ICHCAP handbook Folk Melodies of Nepal describes it as a well-known Nepali folk song from Pokhara. What is clear is the melody, the refrain and the set of images that singers perform, often in varying order. What is not clear is who made it and when.
Who wrote it, and when it was first recorded
Several accounts credit Buddhi Pariyar, but they do not agree on dates. The main reported accounts are set out below, with the qualification each one carries.
| Source | Date of source | What it reports |
|---|---|---|
| Music explainer by Aabhash | 2012 | Says it is difficult to establish whether one person wrote or composed the song, and reports several attributions. |
| Kathmandu Press | Publication date not stated in the accounts consulted | States that the exact date of the first recording lacks definitive documentation. It cites Radio Nepal tape number 846 as the basis for an estimate of a late-1960s or early-1970s recording, discusses Buddhi Pariyar as composer of the tune, and reports uncertainty about early performers and a supposed collaboration. |
| Rising Nepal Daily profile | 2024 | Says the song was born in 1972 and recorded two years later, in 1974. |
| UNESCO-ICHCAP, Folk Melodies of Nepal | Handbook date not stated in the accounts consulted | Documents a 1998 instrumental performance by Durga Thapa, Prem Dev Giri and Padam Gandharva, collected by Buddhi Nepali. This is a documented later recording, not the original. |
The defensible statement is that accounts commonly associate Resham Firiri with Buddhi Pariyar, but sources disagree about when it was first recorded. The 1974 and late-1960s/early-1970s figures are reported estimates from different sources, not a verified date, and the 1998 recording documents the song’s performance at that time rather than its origin.

The lyrics: cats, dogs and a calf
The lyrics combine playful images with a romantic thread. Aabhash’s explainer provides a Nepali text, a romanization and an English translation, but labels the English as unofficial, and singers add or vary lines. Treat any translation as an interpretive aid. The images that recur across the accounts are:
- The refrain “Resham firiri”, which carries the melody and is the phrase listeners remember.
- A dog and a cat.
- Lovers waiting at a crossroads.
- A hunter aiming at a deer while calling out to a beloved.
- A calf in danger near a precipice.
- A lover’s appeal.
What the refrain means
“Resham” is a Nepali word for silk. The accounts consulted do not offer a settled translation of the refrain as a whole, and they do not agree on what the animal images symbolise. Aabhash reads the song as a love exchange while acknowledging other readings. Scroll notes that the animal imagery surprises listeners who take the tune as purely romantic. The song can sustain a romantic reading without every line forming a continuous story.

The sound: one melody, several arrangements
The melody is recognisable across versions, but the instrumentation is not fixed.
| Version | Instruments named | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1998 instrumental recording | madal, sarangi, bansuri, jhamtaar | UNESCO-ICHCAP, Folk Melodies of Nepal |
| Original version, as described by Aabhash | sarangi, madal, bansuri | Music explainer by Aabhash (2012) |
| Later versions | may add guitar, keyboards or drums | Music explainer by Aabhash (2012) |
The madal is a Nepali drum and appears in the 1998 heritage recording. It is one of the instruments in that arrangement, not a requirement for understanding the song.
