Rescue: HI-Surf gave Arielle Kebbel a leading role as a lifeguard lieutenant, but it did not become a second-season opportunity: Fox cancelled the series after one season on May 7, 2025. The claim that the show could break an “eight-year TV streak” is not established by the available career chronology, so it should not be treated as fact.
What was Rescue: HI-Surf?
Fox described Rescue: HI-Surf as a workplace procedural drama about the personal and professional lives of lifeguards patrolling Oahu’s North Shore. Kebbel played Emily “Em” Wright, a lifeguard lieutenant. FOX Entertainment’s 2024–25 program sheet lists the series and its cast.

Why the “eight-year TV streak” claim needs qualification
The sources available establish Kebbel’s role in Rescue: HI-Surf and her earlier work on 9-1-1, but they do not provide a dated chronology demonstrating an eight-year gap or define what would count as a break in such a streak. Without that timeline, the phrase is a promotional framing, not a verified career fact.
Why Fox cancelled the series
Fox cancelled Rescue: HI-Surf after its first season on May 7, 2025. TVLine reported that Warner Bros. Television would not shop the series to other outlets, so there was no announced move to another network or streaming service. TVLine’s cancellation report also put the show at 2.8 million total viewers with delayed playback and said it retained 65% of its lead-in, 9-1-1: Lone Star. Those are figures reported by TVLine; an original Nielsen dataset is not available here.

Fox Television Network and Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn said, “Unfortunately, HI-Surf just didn’t catch on like we had hoped.” Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade said the decision was not about the locale or budget and that the show “just didn’t quite grab the audience.” These are the executives’ explanations as reported by TVLine, not independent proof of the cause.
TVLine’s two cancellation reports gave different overall rankings among Fox dramas: No. 5 of seven in its May 7 report and No. 4 in its May 12 follow-up. Because those rankings conflict, they do not offer a reliable basis for characterizing the series’ place in the network’s lineup.
What Kebbel brought to the role
Kebbel told TV Insider in September 2024 that she prepared by earning lifeguard and scuba-diving certifications and training to operate Jet Skis and all-terrain vehicles. She said training continued during filming and described the work as physically demanding. These are Kebbel’s accounts of her preparation. TV Insider’s September 2024 interview covers that preparation.
Rank #2
In the series finale, Em was offered temporary work overseeing water safety on a wealthy person’s yacht across the Pacific while weighing her career and relationship with colleague Will. In a March 2025 interview, Kebbel described Em and Will as an on-again, off-again couple. She also recounted responding to a motorcycle accident in Hawaii and said that experience helped her understand the bond between first responders. The interview took place before Fox’s cancellation decision, so its discussion of a possible second season reflects what was known at the time. TV Insider’s March 2025 interview includes her account.
Did Rescue: HI-Surf get renewed for Season 2?
No. Fox cancelled the show after one season in May 2025, and TVLine reported that it would not be shopped to other outlets. Em’s open-ended career and relationship storylines were part of the finale, but they did not lead to a continuing season.
What this means for Kebbel’s TV career
Rescue: HI-Surf was a substantial network role for Kebbel, but the cancellation ended the series after one season. The evidence does not establish that it would have broken an eight-year drought, nor does it support a broader conclusion about her career prospects. Her prior 9-1-1 role as Lucy is part of her television history, but the sources here do not establish a return to that series.
