The available coverage does not identify the film or its makers, or document their specific claims, so that description should be treated as the outlet’s account—not as a verified account of the production. The attack itself has been investigated separately: Amnesty International concluded it was a war crime, while The Associated Press published a visual investigation estimating about 600 deaths.
What happened at the Mariupol theater?
On March 16, 2022, the Donetsk Regional Academic Drama Theatre in Mariupol was being used as a shelter by civilians when it was struck. Amnesty International’s investigation says the Russian air strike destroyed the building shortly after 10 a.m. The organization later concluded that the attack was a war crime.
That legal characterization is Amnesty International’s investigative conclusion, not a judgment by a court. It is important to keep that distinction clear when assessing any later film or account of the bombing: a production’s narrative is not itself an independent finding about what happened.
How many people died in the Mariupol theater bombing?
The available investigations do not give the same death toll. Amnesty International’s public summary says at least a dozen people were killed and that many more likely died. The Associated Press’s separate visual investigation found evidence pointing to about 600 deaths. These are distinct estimates, based on different investigations; they should not be combined into a single uncontested count.

| Investigation | Evidence and method | What it says about deaths |
|---|---|---|
| Amnesty International, June 2022 | Its investigation integrated survivor testimony and other evidence. Amnesty also described the difficulty of gathering evidence in an active war zone. | At least a dozen people were killed; many more likely died. |
| The Associated Press, May 2022 | A visual investigation reconstructed events and assessed available visual evidence. | Evidence pointed to about 600 deaths. |
The estimates differ substantially, and the evidence base and approach behind each matter. The figures above are what each publisher reported—not a resolution of the toll by a court or a single agreed accounting.

That leaves a meaningful limit: the report supports saying that The Gaze characterized the film this way, but it does not provide enough detail to summarize the film’s argument or independently verify its intent. Any specific claim attributed to the production would need to be checked against the film itself or an attributable statement from its makers.
Why does the rebuilt theater matter?
The Associated Press reported that the rebuilt theater reopened in late 2025 under Russian-installed authorities in occupied Mariupol. The Gaze’s report places the alleged film production at that rebuilt site. The reopening and filming location provide context for the coverage, but neither establishes the content or accuracy of the reported film.

Which documentaries cover the attack?
The reported Russian production should not be confused with 20 Days in Mariupol, a distinct documentary by Mstyslav Chernov with the Associated Press and PBS FRONTLINE. FRONTLINE’s official page describes the documentary and provides viewing information; availability may change.
Docudays UA’s 2025 festival archive also lists A City Within a Building: The Russian Airstrike on the Mariupol Drama Theater, a related documentary. These works are separate from the Russian film described by The Gaze; the available account does not establish that they share its production or perspective.
