White was born February 1, 1944, in Newark, New Jersey. Whigham Funeral Home’s obituary said his family announced a public funeral service in Newark for July 12, 2024.
Why was Renauld White important in fashion?
White made history in 1979 as the first Black male model to appear on the cover of GQ. That distinction is specifically about a model: Sammy Davis Jr., a Black male celebrity, had appeared on the magazine’s cover in 1967. The Los Angeles Times corrected its original report to clarify the difference.

His career also included appearances in Essence, Ebony and Jet, and work with designers including Bill Blass, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan and Jeffrey Banks. Banks, a longtime friend and fashion designer, remembered White as “always the perfect gentleman and a great ambassador for my brand,” in an Instagram tribute quoted by the Times.
Whigham Funeral Home’s obituary also describes White as the first African American male model to endorse “white” men’s hair products, through a campaign for Vitalis Hair Tonic. The detail reflects the barriers he encountered and helped challenge in the industry.
