That musical grounding shaped a career that moved between jazz, popular recordings, film and television—and made him a guide to other artists’ work as much as a celebrated musician in his own right. Jones was born in Chicago in 1933, grew up in Seattle and died on November 3, 2024, at age 91.
From trumpet player to working arranger
Jones began learning trumpet as a teenager. After moving to New York in the early 1950s, he worked as a musician and arranger with established bandleaders, including Count Basie and Lionel Hampton. In 1956, Dizzy Gillespie selected him for his big band. Gillespie later trusted Jones to assemble a band and serve as musical director on U.S. State Department tours.

Jones moved to Paris in 1957 to study music theory with Nadia Boulanger. He also led an orchestra that toured Europe and North America. These years established the practical range behind his later executive career: he could perform, arrange, lead musicians and shape a musical vision from the inside.
How Jones became a music executive
In 1960, Jones became music director at Mercury Records. He was named the label’s vice president in 1964. Those milestones did not mark a departure from music-making: he continued to compose and arrange while taking on broader responsibility in the recording business.

- Nominated for 12 Grammy Awards, including a win for Jones for Producer of the Year, Quincy's 1981 album The Dude was simply one of the tightest realizations of his talents: orchestration, arranging, sequencing, his ear for anticipating new sounds, and ability to assemble a knock-out team of musicians, writers and engineers
Also in 1964, Jones wrote his first film score, for Sidney Lumet’s The Pawnbroker. He later moved to Los Angeles to pursue film composition. The National Endowment for the Arts says he wrote scores for more than 35 films, including In Cold Blood, In the Heat of the Night and The Italian Job. His career therefore connected the studio, the label office and the film soundstage rather than fitting neatly into one job title.
A producer across jazz and pop
Jones kept recording his own albums while producing other artists. The NEA highlights his work with Frank Sinatra and Count Basie, as well as Jones’s own Grammy-winning albums released between 1969 and 1981. After recovering from a near-fatal cerebral aneurysm in 1974, he returned to production.

- Step into the cosmic jazz-funk odyssey of Walking in Space, Quincy Jones' electrifying foray into fusion
His collaborations with Michael Jackson brought that work to an enormous pop audience. Jones produced Off the Wall and Thriller; the Television Academy also credits him as producer of Bad. These landmark albums are central to his legacy, but they belong to a career that already encompassed jazz performance, arranging, executive leadership and film scoring.
Jones’s view of production emphasized the work of making an idea cohere. In a 2016 Library of Congress interview quoted by the Associated Press, he said: “The tracks don’t just all of a sudden appear. The producer has to have the skill, experience and ability to guide the vision to completion.”

We Are the World and work beyond the studio
In 1985, Jones produced and conducted We Are the World, a charity recording made to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The project brought a large group of performers together around a shared recording, drawing on the same skills of musical direction and coordination that had marked his work with bands and artists.
His honors reflect several different parts of that career. The NEA named him a Jazz Master in 2008 and reports that he received the National Medal of Arts in 2010. The Recording Academy lists a Trustees Award in 1989, a Grammy Legend Award in 1992, MusiCares Person of the Year in 1996 and the PEACE Through Music Award in 2023.

What Quincy Jones is remembered for
Jones’s legacy is not captured by one role or one measure. He was a working jazz musician who became an arranger and bandleader, a composer for film, a record executive and a producer whose credits spanned generations and genres. The Recording Academy’s 2024 memorial and the NEA report 28 Grammy wins and 80 nominations. The Academy’s artist profile, however, says 79 nominations; its memorial and the NEA give the later total of 80.
Jones described jazz as a defining part of his life. In a personal statement published by the NEA, he said he was grateful to have been born in a time when he could “witness and play a role in the growth of the only true indigenous American art form, jazz.” That sense of participation—in music’s growth, and in the work of the artists around him—also helps explain why his executive achievements remain inseparable from his musicianship.
