At the close of the 1987 Slammy Awards, a group of WWF wrestlers gathered to perform “If You Only Knew.” Retrospective coverage remembers the scene for one striking contrast: while the performers clapped and swayed together, Virgil stood still with his arms crossed. Why he did so is not established.

What happened at the 1987 Slammy Awards?

A retrospective by The Wrestling Insomniac describes “If You Only Knew” as the finale of the 1987 Slammy Awards. Jesse Ventura and Mean Gene introduced the song, credited there to WWE All Stars. The performers stood together like a choir, clapping and swaying; Virgil was the conspicuous exception, remaining still with his arms crossed.

The same retrospective describes the group as lip-synching. That is the writer’s observation of the performance, not a documented account of how the vocals were recorded or assigned.

Why wasn’t Virgil singing or moving?

The surviving retrospective descriptions establish what viewers can see, not Virgil’s motive. They do not say whether his stillness was planned, intended as a joke, or simply his choice in the moment. Without a statement from Virgil or another reliable production account, any explanation would be speculation.

What was “If You Only Knew”?

Retrospective sources associate the song with WWF’s Piledriver album. A separate recap of the November 15, 1987 episode of WWF Wrestling Challenge reports that Ted DiBiase introduced an “If You Only Knew” video segment. That television reference is distinct from the Slammy finale; it does not establish the finale’s exact air date or the song’s production chronology.

The available accounts do not establish a definitive list of everyone on the Slammy stage, individual vocal assignments, or official release and production credits. The memorable “whole roster” description captures the scale of the scene, but should not be taken as a verified roster census.

How to revisit the moment

For the performance itself, look for footage of the 1987 Slammy Awards rather than relying only on a written recap. A full sequence is more useful than a short excerpt for seeing how the finale was introduced and how the group behaved onstage. The retrospective descriptions are helpful guides to what to look for, but they are not official archival records.

For the song’s album context, look for WWF’s Piledriver and check the edition and condition before buying: current availability is not established by the retrospective references.
