Spoilers: Sarah’s apparent whistleblower crisis is a setup. She is working with Dawson and Rosetti to get Ash’s copy of Hoffman’s Optimo documents. Ash survives the betrayal and gives Wash access to the files; the ending implies Optimo’s wrongdoing will be exposed. What remains deliberately unsettled is whether Sarah’s connection with Ash was ever sincere.
How the ending’s twist works
Ash makes his living brokering deals between corporations and people who threaten to expose them. His anonymity and strict rules help him do that work—and protect him if a company breaks its bargain. He keeps copies of sensitive material as leverage.
Sarah first appears to be a scientist in danger. She tells Ash that she found evidence of harm connected to a genetically modified wheat strain and wants to return the material and move on. But her apparent rescue case is part of a plan: she is working with Dawson and Rosetti to get Ash’s copy of documents connected to Optimo and Hoffman.
That changes the purpose of the pursuit. The aim is not simply to retrieve Sarah’s material; Optimo’s people need to find and control the copy Ash kept as protection. The danger around Sarah draws Ash into the open, while his growing involvement with her makes him less careful than his professional rules demand.

Why Ash uses a relay service—and why it matters
Ash communicates through an analog TTY relay service rather than directly identifying himself. Director David Mackenzie explained to Scott Simon on Texas Public Radio/NPR that a caller speaks to an operator, who relays the message by text through a TTY device to a hard-of-hearing user, then voices the typed reply back to the caller. Mackenzie also said operators are not permitted to disclose what they see or hear, and described the technology as becoming increasingly redundant. Those details describe the process discussed in the interview, not a current technical or legal guide.
The relay is part of Ash’s tradecraft, but it also underscores his isolation. Mackenzie said Ash and Sarah share “a bond of isolation and loneliness” and begin building something “arguably slightly more than professional.” Their conversations can feel intimate, but that closeness does not establish that Sarah is being honest about her motives.

Did Sarah really care about Ash?
The film does not confirm whether Sarah’s feelings were genuine. In an Entertainment Weekly interview republished by AOL, Mackenzie said, “when we were shooting, we didn’t have an answer to that question.” He later said the filmmakers chose to minimize the question in editing “rather than make a bit of melodrama about it.”
So neither “Sarah definitely loved Ash” nor “Sarah never felt anything” is confirmed. Riz Ahmed offered a reading that preserves that uncertainty: “Whether Sarah is a victim being hunted by the powers that be or a mercenary working for the powers that be, I’m guessing it’s a lonely place to be either way.” Sarah can be hunting Ash and still have felt a real connection; the film leaves that possibility open rather than resolving it.

What happens to Hoffman’s documents?
Ash escapes the trap and gives Wash access to the Optimo files. The final movement implies the information will reach authorities and Optimo’s fraud will be exposed. The exact handling of every document is less firmly established than the central betrayal: the detailed account of the handoff comes from a secondary plot explanation, while Mackenzie separately confirms that Ash escapes and Optimo’s fraud is exposed.

Ash’s choice to expose the material is a moral turn as well as a practical one. He had kept the copy as insurance in case a corporation broke its agreement; after Optimo’s people threaten him and try to take control of that leverage, he allows the files to be used against the company. His safeguards help make the exposure possible, but his attachment to Sarah also shows how a personal bond can compromise the distance his work depends on.
