In a 2018 interview with Scroll.in, journalist and author Reham Khan said she had been told her memoir would be viewed chiefly as the account of the former wife of Pakistan’s prime minister. She described the book instead as a personal record with a broader purpose: encouraging readers to think about how they choose leaders and partners, and how they respond to propaganda.
What Reham Khan said the memoir was meant to do
Neha Bhatt’s interview with Khan was published by Scroll.in on August 25, 2018. Khan said her motivation was to document what she knew and had experienced: “My motivation was simply to put down what I know so that it would be documented.” She also described the book as self-help, saying, “It is a self-help book”. Those are Khan’s descriptions of her own work, not an independent assessment of the memoir.

As she explained it, the book was intended to prompt reflection beyond her personal story: how people choose leaders and partners, and how they respond to propaganda. She said she hoped readers might find answers or inspiration in what she had written.
How she said the book came together
Khan described a demanding publication process in which she and her son took on substantial work themselves, including arranging printing, finding proofreaders and copy-editors, and securing legal reads. She recalled, “My life is no less than a soap opera,” and said her photographic memory helped her piece the story together with her son’s help.

Khan denied timing the memoir for an election. She also discussed threats and her expectations about the political outcome. These points are her account in the interview; the interview does not independently corroborate the threats, political events, or outcome.

Khan said sensational coverage focused on allegations concerning Imran Khan and, in her view, obscured the memoir’s wider purpose. She recalled being told, “I was told categorically that my memoir was going to be that of the ex-wife of the PM of a Muslim nuclear armed country.” The line is her recollection of what she was told, not a verified prediction. She said, “I wanted to be on the right side of history, that’s all,” and, “I was meant to be free.”
