REESE’S Peanut Butter Cups began as H.B. Reese’s basement-made candy in Hershey, Pennsylvania, in 1928. The Hershey Company’s history also explains how Reese’s former employer helped launch the venture, how the cups get their shape, and why the brand says its name rhymes with “pieces.”
Who invented Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups?
Hersheyland says Harry Burnett (H.B.) Reese created REESE’S Cups in 1928 in his basement in Hershey. Reese had worked for Hershey, and The Hershey Company’s timeline says Milton Hershey supported Reese’s candy venture by supplying milk chocolate. Hersheyland’s REESE’S page and its candy timeline provide the company’s account of the origin.
How did the business become part of Hershey?
According to Hersheyland, Reese’s six sons took over the family business in 1956. They sold it to The Hershey Company in 1963, a date also listed in the company timeline.
How are the cups made, and what are the ridges for?
Hersheyland describes the process as beginning with roasting peanuts for the brand’s peanut butter. The peanut butter and milk chocolate are then placed in a mold that forms the cup. The company calls the grooved edge the cup’s “ridges”; its pages describe the shape and process but do not state a separate purpose for the ridges.

How many Reese’s Cups does Hershey make each day?
Hersheyland says, “We make 25M REESE’S Cups every day at our Hershey factory.” The brand page does not date this company-published figure, so it should be read as Hershey’s stated production number, not as an independently verified or year-specific count.
How do you pronounce REESE’S?
Hersheyland gives the pronunciation as “ree-siz,” rhyming with “pieces.”

Hersheyland says the wider REESE’S product line includes more than 100 candy bars, spreads, cookies, and cereals; that number refers to the line as a whole, not to cup varieties.
A package-specific nutrition example
One current Hersheyland listing is for a 33 oz snack-size bag containing 60 pieces. For that specific product, the listed serving is two pieces (31 g) and 160 calories. Its listing names milk, peanuts, and soy as allergens and labels it gluten free. Ingredients and nutrition vary by product, so check the package in hand rather than applying this listing to every REESE’S item. See the snack-size product listing.
