The “friends” description refers to a July 2024 dinner sighting in New York City. A PEOPLE source, in a report republished by Yahoo, characterized Reese Witherspoon and Oliver Haarmann as friends; another unnamed insider said she was taking things slowly. Later reports attributed a dating description to a source, but neither person directly confirmed the relationship in the cited coverage.
What the July 2024 report said
The title refers to a reported dinner outing in New York City in July 2024, not a newly reported October 2026 sighting. In the Yahoo-hosted copy of a PEOPLE report, an unnamed PEOPLE source described Witherspoon and Haarmann as “friends.” A second insider characterized Witherspoon as taking things slowly. Those are source-attributed descriptions, not statements from Witherspoon or Haarmann. Yahoo’s republication of the PEOPLE report is the available version of the title-matching story.

How later coverage described the relationship
| Date | Report and evidence type | What it said |
|---|---|---|
| September 5, 2024 | Us Weekly report citing an unnamed source | The source said the relationship had “turned romantic” after a period of spending time together as friends. The report also described a New York outing on September 4. Us Weekly’s September report. |
| October 26, 2024 | PEOPLE report republished by Yahoo, citing an unnamed source | The report described Witherspoon as enjoying dating Haarmann and quoted a source saying she was “having fun.” Yahoo’s PEOPLE report. |
| June 2026 | ELLE coverage of a public appearance | The pair attended the New York premiere of Elle together; ELLE described it as their red-carpet debut. This is evidence of a joint public appearance, not a direct statement about their relationship status. ELLE’s relationship timeline and ELLE’s coverage of Haarmann. |
The accounts differ in date and type: the July item is a dinner sighting paired with anonymous-source descriptions; the later 2024 stories report anonymous sources’ dating characterization; the June 2026 coverage records a public appearance. They should not be treated as equivalent forms of confirmation.
Who is Oliver Haarmann?
A PEOPLE report republished by Yahoo identifies Haarmann as a financier, a founding partner of Searchlight Capital, and a minority co-owner of the New York Islanders. Those biographical details provide context but do not independently verify what the relationship was or is. The PEOPLE report hosted by Yahoo.
