Superboys of Malegaon is a fictionalized feature inspired by filmmaker Nasir Shaikh and Malegaon’s do-it-yourself video-film scene. Director Reema Kagti describes it not as a documentary record, but as a story about the friendships, shared work and resourcefulness behind making films—and why a story rooted in one town can resonate beyond it.
What is Superboys of Malegaon about?
Directed by Reema Kagti and written by Varun Grover, the Hindi feature follows Nasir Shaikh, played by Adarsh Gourav, and the circle of collaborators around him. Its inspiration is Malegaon’s locally rooted video-film culture, sometimes called “Mollywood,” where Shaikh and others made low-budget films and parodies. The works named in Kagti’s interview include Malegaon Ke Sholay, Malegaon Ke Shaan and Superman of Malegaon. The cast also includes Vineet Kumar Singh, Shashank Arora and Anuj Singh Duhan. Kagti’s central interest is the act of making films together: the friendships, improvisation and collective effort that turn limited resources into a shared creative project. She connects that resourcefulness to filmmaking at any budget level, and to her own journey from a small town to Mumbai. The film’s underdog story is therefore also a story about community and who gets represented in cinema.
Why did Kagti want to tell Shaikh’s story?
In her account, the project began when Zoya Akhtar came across Shaikh’s story around 2012. Kagti says Grover travelled to Malegaon, and the filmmakers spoke with Shaikh, his friends and his family. She describes Shaikh as having an unusually rich personal archive, including footage of the group together outside their filmmaking. This is Kagti’s account of how the project developed, rather than an independently audited production history. (Scroll, February 23, 2025)

Kagti says the appeal was not simply the novelty of a town’s film scene. Shaikh’s story offered a way to explore creative ambition and collaboration from a perspective that is often far from the center of the Indian film industry. She also stresses the importance of approaching a community without condescension: the feature’s affection for its characters is part of how it presents their ingenuity and relationships.
Is Superboys of Malegaon a true story?
Kagti is explicit about the distinction: “Superboys of Malegaon is neither a biopic nor a documentary.” She says the filmmakers researched Shaikh and the people around him, but the feature uses composite characters and fictionalization; not every event should be taken as historically accurate. It is best understood as a researched, inspired-by narrative rather than a scene-by-scene record of what happened. (Scroll, February 23, 2025)

That qualification matters in a film about a real community. The research and conversations provide a foundation, while the fictional form lets the story shape a wider dramatic arc. Kagti recounts that Shaikh watched the film and told her she had done justice to him, his absent friends and Malegaon; that response is reported through Kagti’s interview, not independently documented.
How does the feature relate to Supermen of Malegaon?
Faiza Ahmed Khan’s documentary Supermen of Malegaon (2008) had already brought the town’s filmmaking culture to a wider audience. Kagti says the feature acknowledges the documentary in its end credits, but it is not a remake. The two works have different forms and scopes:

The documentary offers a nonfiction account; Kagti’s film uses fictional storytelling to reach beyond a single production and explore the people and relationships around it. One is not a substitute for the other.
What did Kagti want the film to celebrate?
For Kagti, the subject is both a specific community and the pleasure of making movies. Friendship and shared labor are as important as the finished films: the group’s creative work gives the story its emotional center. She sums up her intention this way: “This is a film that celebrates the magic of cinema, and we have shot it with a lot of love.” (Scroll, February 23, 2025)
