The search took 17 years from the recording’s online posting in 2007 to the public identification—not 17 years from the song’s original radio broadcast.
What was the mystery song?
It was an unidentified track recorded off the radio onto cassette in the 1980s. The listener did not write down its title or performer. In 2007, the listener’s siblings had the cassette recording digitized and posted it online, asking for help identifying it. The clip eventually became known as the “Most Mysterious Song on the Internet.”

The answer is “Subways of Your Mind,” performed by FEX, a regional band from Kiel in northern Germany. Contemporary reports by CBS News/AFP and SRF describe how the identification was made public in November 2024.
How did Reddit investigators solve it?
From an online clip to a broader search
Listeners tried to identify the track by its sound, instruments and singer, and pursued music databases and other leads. The search reached a larger audience when the song was posted to Reddit in 2019, but recognition by sound alone did not settle its identity.

An old band reference led to FEX
Reddit user marijn1412 followed a reference to a regional band in an old newspaper and recognized former members of FEX. After contacting them, the researcher received a version of the song. FEX members confirmed the title as “Subways of Your Mind.” They had not known about the online search until they were contacted.
The identification rested on more than a resemblance or an unverified online claim: Michael Hädrich retained a cassette containing the song, live recordings also existed, and band members supplied a version that matched the circulated track. CBS/AFP reported the members’ recording; SRF reported Hädrich’s retained cassette.

Why do reports call it a 17-year mystery?
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1980s | A listener taped the unidentified song from the radio onto cassette. |
| 2007 | The recording was digitized and posted online to seek an identification. |
| 2019 | The song was posted to Reddit, expanding the search. |
| November 2024 | Reports publicly identified the song as “Subways of Your Mind” by FEX. CBS/AFP published its report November 6; SRF published its report November 13. |
So “17 years” describes the span from the 2007 online appeal to the 2024 identification. The recording itself had been made in the 1980s, earlier than that online search.
What happened after the identification?
Official physical releases followed. FEX’s Bandcamp page for “Subways Of Your Mind” describes a 7-inch vinyl single. Its version-history note says the digital masters were replaced in July 2025, while vinyl copies retained the earlier master.

The band’s Bandcamp catalog also lists physical CD and LP editions of Skyscraper that include the song. The catalog notes sold-out editions and a backstock update dated July 30, 2026; stock and edition availability can change. These are distinct formats, and the available information does not establish current availability through any particular retailer.

The resolution combines the elements of a documentary investigation: an incomplete artifact, years of failed leads, a regional historical clue and direct testimony from people connected to the recording. It also shows why crowdsourced identification can need more than a large audience. In this case, the breakthrough came when a researcher connected an archival reference to the musicians and obtained a recording from them.

- Factory sealed DVD
Michael Haedrich, FEX keyboard and guitar player, described his surprise at the attention in a remark to Der Spiegel quoted by CBS/AFP: “I thought it was amazing that someone was interested in music by a band that was only successful regionally, if at all, and that was over 40 years ago.” Bayerischer Rundfunk’s ARD Sounds also listed a documentary about the story on November 13, 2024: “Das Rätsel um den ‘Most Mysterious Song on the Internet’”.
