What happened to Redbox and its owner?
Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, the owner of Redbox, and related companies sought Chapter 11 protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The debtor list included Redbox Automated Retail, Redbox Entertainment and Redbox Holdings. The petitions were filed on June 28 and 29, 2024, according to the company chairman’s first-day declaration filed with the court (court case records).
Chapter 11 was the starting point, not the final form of the cases. On July 10, 2024, the court converted them to Chapter 7, which put them into liquidation. George L. Miller was appointed interim trustee on July 11 and later served as permanent trustee. In a subsequent court filing, the trustee said the debtors had ceased all operations by the time of conversion.
What Redbox operated when the bankruptcy was filed
In a June 29, 2024 declaration supporting the Chapter 11 filings, chairman William J. Rouhana Jr. described Redbox’s business as including approximately 24,000 DVD rental kiosks across the United States, a free ad-supported live-TV service and transactional video-on-demand. The kiosk figure is the company’s filing-era estimate; it is not a count of operating kiosks today (company declaration in the court records).

Those descriptions explain the scale and mix of the business at the time of filing. They do not mean the services continued after the Chapter 7 conversion: the trustee later stated that the debtors had stopped all operations by then.

Is the Redbox bankruptcy over?
No final end to the proceedings is established by the available court developments. The September 2026 opinion was a procedural ruling on motions to dismiss, not a final decision on every claim. It allowed some claims to proceed, dismissed others and required an amended complaint. The court’s account of allegations in that opinion is procedural context: allegations considered at the motion-to-dismiss stage are not, by that fact alone, proven findings.

The public docket listing showed additional activity into October 2026, but it is an aggregator rather than the court’s own docket system. For a current hearing schedule, case closure, distribution or final litigation outcome, check the official case records rather than treating an older docket listing as definitive.
