But that does not mean the machines left outside stores are free to take—or that individuals can currently buy one through an authorized public channel. The available records document a bankruptcy asset-marketing process, not a confirmed sale route for intact kiosks to individual buyers.
What happened to Redbox’s machines?
Redbox’s parent company, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, moved from restructuring toward Chapter 7 liquidation in July 2024, and the company’s kiosk network was being shut down, CT Insider reported on July 12, 2024. When Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment acquired Redbox in 2022, about 27,000 kiosks were installed in retail stores nationally, according to the same report.
The scale of the network helps explain why a machine might remain visible at a store after service ended. Its presence, however, does not establish that the store owns it or can authorize its removal.
Did the bankruptcy process make kiosks available to the public?
A 2025 debtor filing describes a court-supervised marketing process involving approximately 57 potential purchasers, 32 indications of interest and seven qualified auction bidders. Those figures concern the estate’s company and asset marketing process; they do not show that individual kiosks were offered for public purchase. The filing also discusses a court-supervised consumer privacy review related to possible sales or leases of personally identifiable information, a separate matter from authority to transfer a kiosk.

The filing does not establish a public individual-buyer channel for intact machines. No reviewed source confirms a current authorized purchase route, price, condition, or removal terms for a kiosk. Nor does the available reporting provide a named official’s statement confirming that individuals can acquire one.
What to verify before trying to acquire a kiosk
If you find a specific machine or a claimed sale listing, verify the details with a current primary source before paying or arranging pickup. A machine still at a store should not be treated as abandoned: get permission from the party authorized to dispose of it.
