A red eye is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Many cases are caused by dryness or irritation, but redness can also signal infection, injury, or inflammation. Seek urgent medical care for sudden vision changes, severe eye pain, light sensitivity, halos, nausea or vomiting with a headache, an eye injury, or chemical exposure. Contact lens wearers with a red eye should get prompt professional advice.
When a red eye needs urgent care
Get urgent medical help if redness comes with any of these warning signs:
- Sudden changes in vision, halos around lights, or pupils that look unequal.
- Severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, or a severe headache with nausea or vomiting.
- An injury, something stuck in the eye, or a splash of a dangerous liquid.
- Swelling, very dark redness, or difficulty opening the eye.
Contact lens wearers should seek prompt advice rather than waiting to see whether a red eye settles: infection is one possible cause. Use the urgent-care service appropriate to your location; emergency pathways and service names vary by country. Mayo Clinic’s red-eye guidance and the NHS red-eye advice describe warning signs and care routes.
Common causes and clues
Redness happens when blood vessels on the eye’s surface swell or widen. Dryness, allergens, dust, infection, injury, and inflammation can all do this, so redness by itself cannot identify the cause. The symptom pattern may offer clues, but it is not a reliable diagnosis.

| What you notice | Possible explanation |
|---|---|
| A bright-red patch on the white of the eye | A small surface blood vessel may have broken. |
| Gritty or burning eyes, sometimes with stickiness | Conjunctivitis is one possibility. |
| Soreness, blurriness, or watering | Dry eye can cause these symptoms and redness. |
| Itchy, sore, or crusted eyelids | Blepharitis may be involved. |
| A swollen eyelid or lump | An eyelid problem may be the cause. |
Other possibilities include allergies, a scratch or ulcer on the cornea, uveitis, and acute glaucoma. MedlinePlus, the U.S. National Library of Medicine, notes that eye redness is often less concerning than eye pain or vision problems; its eye redness overview describes possible causes and when to seek medical assessment.
What to do for mild redness
If your eye is not painful, your vision is unaffected, and you do not feel unwell, mild redness may settle on its own. Avoid rubbing the eye and stop wearing contact lenses until it has improved. Do not use leftover prescription eye drops or assume that a drop marketed to remove redness will treat the cause.

If dryness seems to be the issue
Artificial tears can relieve mild dry-eye symptoms, and dry eye can cause redness. Preservative-free artificial tears eye drops are one option in this limited role; they are not a cure for unexplained redness, infection, injury, or other serious conditions. NIH guidance on dry eye describes artificial tears as a common over-the-counter treatment.
When to ask for advice
Get advice from a clinician, pharmacist, or optician according to local services if redness persists, worsens, keeps returning, or comes with sticky or pus-like discharge. Seek advice for a child under two, too. An NHS pharmacist can advise on self-care and whether further assessment is appropriate; the NHS explains this role in its red-eye guidance.
If conjunctivitis may be the cause
Viral, bacterial, and allergic conjunctivitis can look similar, but they do not all respond to the same treatment. Antibiotics do not treat viral pink eye. Mild bacterial conjunctivitis may improve without antibiotics, and a clinician should guide treatment decisions when symptoms are serious, persistent, or worsening. Allergic conjunctivitis may improve when the allergen is removed; a health professional can advise whether allergy medicines or drops are suitable. Newborns with pink eye need prompt medical attention.

Cold compresses and artificial tears may ease some irritation or dryness. Avoid contact lenses until an eye doctor says it is safe to resume them, or, if you have not had an appointment, until symptoms have resolved. If infectious conjunctivitis is possible, wash your hands, avoid rubbing your eyes, and clean discharge with a clean wet cloth or fresh cotton ball. Do not share towels, pillows, makeup, or glasses; replace contact-lens supplies and makeup used during the infection. A painless, sharply defined red patch on the white of the eye can be a subconjunctival hemorrhage—a small bleed beneath the clear surface covering. It may follow straining or coughing, and it often changes color as it fades over one to two weeks. That reassuring pattern does not apply if there is pain, a vision change, or an injury. Seek professional advice if the bleed recurs or if you take blood thinners. MedlinePlus explains this condition in its eye redness overview.
