Choose the platform, resolution, frame rate and codec first; use the platform’s recommended encoder bitrate; then make sure your connection can sustain that bitrate with spare capacity. Test a representative stream before going live. A speed-test result is not the same thing as your stream’s bitrate.
What upload speed do you need to livestream?
Your encoder sends video and audio from your device to the streaming platform. The bitrate is how much data the encoder sends each second; upload speed is the capacity your internet connection can provide. The connection needs enough sustained upload capacity for the stream, plus room for fluctuations and other network use.
As a practical starting point, OBS recommends setting stream bitrate to 75% of total upload speed. This is a rule of thumb, not a platform requirement or a guarantee of stability. For example, a 12 Mbps stream bitrate would correspond to 16 Mbps total upload capacity at that 75% starting point. If other devices or applications use the connection, less capacity may be available to the stream.
Streaming platforms publish encoder bitrate recommendations, not universal minimum ISP-plan speeds. A one-time speed test can indicate capacity at that moment; it cannot by itself establish that the route to the platform will remain stable throughout a broadcast.

Recommended YouTube bitrate by resolution, frame rate and codec
YouTube’s current encoder guidance varies by codec as well as picture size and frame rate. The figures below are recommended encoder bitrates in Mbps, not minimum internet upload speeds. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Use the row for your actual output settings and codec. For instance, a 1080p60 H.264 stream has a 17 Mbps recommended encoder bitrate in YouTube’s guidance, while AV1 or H.265 has a 12 Mbps recommendation. Do not treat either number as the internet-plan speed to buy: account for headroom and confirm stability with a test.

How to estimate and test the upload capacity you need
- Choose the destination and output. Decide whether you are streaming to YouTube, Twitch or another platform, then select resolution, frame rate and codec. Recommendations and feature availability differ by platform.
- Set the encoder bitrate from that platform’s current guidance. For YouTube, use the table above and check YouTube Help’s current encoder settings. For other platforms, consult their current creator guidance rather than assuming YouTube’s numbers apply.
- Compare bitrate with measured upload capacity. OBS’s 75% guideline is a useful starting point for leaving capacity unused. Treat it as a starting point only: competing network use and connection variation can reduce what is consistently available.
- Run a representative test stream. Include the kind of movement and audio your actual event will have. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health. Twitch Inspector provides bandwidth-health testing for Twitch broadcasts.
- Adjust based on the test. If the stream is unstable or drops frames, reduce bitrate, test another ingest server where available, and check the local network and software issues described below.
How much upload speed do YouTube and Twitch need?
YouTube
YouTube’s recommendations are codec-specific encoder bitrates, not fixed upload-speed minimums. YouTube also transcodes streams to create viewer output formats. Test the precise resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate you intend to use, and check stream health before the event.
Twitch
Twitch’s delivery documentation describes a stream traveling over the internet to an ingest server using RTMP and directs broadcasters to Twitch Inspector for bandwidth-health testing. Twitch’s currently indexed 1440p/60 guidance gives upstream figures of 20 Mbps without added server-side transcode support and 9 Mbps when that support is available. These figures are conditional on that setup, not general Twitch minimums; verify current requirements in the creator dashboard before relying on them.

A Twitch blog post from March 29, 2017 recommended 3–6 Mbps for most streams, leaning toward the higher end for 1080p or demanding games. That is a historical recommendation, not a current universal limit. The useful enduring point is that a stable lower-bitrate stream is preferable to a higher-quality stream that drops frames.
Why a fast speed test may still produce dropped frames
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A speed test measures a point-in-time result; the live stream depends on a sustained route to the platform while the broadcast is underway.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Wi-Fi instability: Try a wired Ethernet connection. It can improve the local link’s stability, but it does not increase the upload capacity provided by your ISP.
- Bitrate too demanding: Lower the video bitrate and retest. A stream may need a more conservative setting than a brief speed test suggests.
- Ingest route trouble: Test another ingest server when the platform or encoder offers that option.
- VPN or network software: Check whether a VPN, network-prioritization tool or other network software is interfering; temporarily disabling it for a controlled test can help isolate the cause.
- Local or ISP connectivity issue: Restarting the modem/router may help diagnose connectivity problems. If OBS’s network checks do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP before assuming equipment needs replacement.
How to keep a YouTube stream running without a home computer
For a conventional live broadcast, the encoder at your location must send the stream to the platform throughout the broadcast, so its internet connection and device need to remain available. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, a cloud service changes where that ongoing stream originates: you upload the recording, then the cloud service sends it to YouTube. Your home connection does not have to carry the live stream continuously.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.

Cost and planning considerations
For a self-hosted live broadcast, the upload capacity requirement is only one part of the cost: you also need a device and connection that can sustain the stream. If you are evaluating a 24/7 pre-recorded YouTube stream, compare the cost and reliability of keeping a home computer and internet connection running with a cloud option. StreamNeo offers day, week, month, six-month and yearly billing, with the same product on each plan; see its pricing page for current terms.
If you are sending multiple outputs, there is no established universal upload-speed minimum for multistreaming. Work out whether your setup sends each stream separately or relays one stream, then account for each output’s settings and test the actual configuration. The required capacity depends on that arrangement.
Sources and date context
YouTube Help’s codec-specific encoder guidance and Twitch Help’s currently indexed 1440p/60 guidance were checked on October 3, 2026. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance is dated September 30, 2024. Platform settings and eligibility can change, so verify the destination’s current recommendations and dashboard requirements before an important broadcast.
