Omikron: The Nomad Soul was a real 1999 science-fiction game featuring David Bowie. It was developed by Quantic Dream and published by Eidos Interactive—not made by Microsoft—and no credible evidence identifies Bill Gates as involved. The connection to COVID-19 arose in 2021, when the game’s title and a decontextualized scene were matched to the newly prominent Omicron variant.
What is Omikron: The Nomad Soul?
The Nomad Soul is the title used in many markets; in North America, the game was released as Omikron: The Nomad Soul. It is a single-player science-fiction adventure set in the futuristic city of Omikron, where the player investigates a series of killings. Exploration, conversations, puzzles and combat are joined by a reincarnation mechanic that lets the player continue through different bodies.
The game was an early project from French studio Quantic Dream, later known for Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human. Its blend of cinematic storytelling and interactive performance helped distinguish it in the late 1990s. A game overview and release history are collected at The Nomad Soul reference page.
Who made it, and what did Microsoft have to do with it?

Windows is a Microsoft operating system, but a game made for Windows is not thereby a Microsoft game. The platform relationship is real; the available reporting identifies Quantic Dream and Eidos as developer and publisher, not Microsoft. GeekWire’s December 2, 2021 fact-check explains the distinction and the viral claim’s context: GeekWire’s reality check on Omikron.
What did David Bowie contribute?
Bowie was more than a voice cameo: he appeared as a virtual character and contributed to the game’s music and musical identity. Members of his musical circle, including Reeves Gabrels and Gail Ann Dorsey, were also associated with the music or the fictional band in the game. These artistic contributions help explain why an old cutscene featuring Bowie attracted attention, but they do not connect him to the later pandemic or show that he anticipated it.

Why did the game go viral in 2021?
Interest surged in December 2021, after the SARS-CoV-2 variant named Omicron became a major public subject in November. Social-media users rediscovered the 1999 game because its North American title looked and sounded similar. A clip of Bowie’s character discussing government control and “puppets” was reposted as if it were a warning about current events. Some posts added Gates, drawing on conspiracy narratives that had already targeted him during the pandemic.
The timeline matters: the game’s Windows release was in 1999, and its Dreamcast version followed in 2000. The viral association came more than two decades later. Its timing is consistent with retrospective pattern-matching—a new event makes an old title and a striking old scene seem newly significant—not evidence that the creators foresaw the variant. GeekWire covered the episode in 2021, and a software-history compilation also notes the December resurgence: The Nomad Soul history.

No. The game title is spelled Omikron, with a k; the English spelling of the Greek-letter name and the WHO variant designation is Omicron, with a c. The resemblance is close enough to be memorable online, but the spellings differ. The game’s 1999 release also predates the variant’s 2021 prominence, so it could not have been named for that variant.
What is the “government puppets” scene about?
The clip belongs to the game’s fictional dystopian story. Omikron depicts coercive political power and explores control, surveillance, identity, reincarnation and resistance. Bowie’s character speaks within that invented setting; the scene advances the narrative rather than documenting a real-world plan or making a claim about a future disease.

- This thrilling adventure starts when you and your schoolmates visit a mysterious remote island
- Although seemingly normal at first, you and your schoolmates have to figure out what is really happening on this island
- Explore places, combine items, find clues, and talk to people to grasp the plot and devise a plan
- With each new action, the story unfolds, similar to a PC adventure game
- Enough story content to play multiple times with different endings each time, approximately 5 hours of playtime
Removed from the game, forceful political language can sound uncannily topical, especially when paired with a famous performer and a title that resembles a current headline. That effect is not evidence of foreknowledge. GeekWire identifies the clip as part of the game’s fictional anti-government plot. The game also contains mature material; its Steam product page is age-gated and carries a mature-content warning.

Bill Gates co-founded Microsoft, and Microsoft Windows was one of the game’s platforms. Neither fact establishes that Gates made, commissioned or controlled the game. The production accounts identify Quantic Dream and Eidos Interactive, while no credible evidence of a Gates production or authorship role has been identified. The Gates link in viral posts appears to have been imported from broader COVID-19 conspiracy narratives, not from the game’s documented credits.

A Steam product page for Omikron: The Nomad Soul is available, but its current price, regional availability and present-day compatibility should be checked on the page before buying. The existence of a listing does not guarantee a smooth experience on every modern computer. The game is also age-gated and flagged for mature content, so it should not be assumed suitable for children.
