Some television romances have a real-life counterpart: the actors playing a couple also became partners off screen. These five examples meet both parts of that description—the performers were a real couple, and their characters were romantic partners. They span primetime dramas and daytime soaps; they are selected examples, not a complete census.
Primetime TV couples
Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys in The Americans
On FX’s Cold War drama, Russell and Rhys played Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, a married couple. TVLine reports that the actors became romantically involved after reconnecting on the set. The relationship began while they were working on the series; the cited account does not establish its later outcome.
Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons in Fargo
In season two of FX’s anthology series, Dunst and Plemons played a married Minnesota couple. They met while making the show and began dating later, according to TVLine. They married in 2022. Here, as in The Americans, the fictional marriage was already part of the actors’ work when their real-life relationship developed.
Emily VanCamp and Josh Bowman in Revenge
VanCamp played Emily Thorne and Bowman played Daniel Grayson, whose relationship was romantic on the ABC drama. TV Insider reports that the actors began their relationship in 2011 and married in 2018. The source’s 2024 account also reports that they have two daughters.

Daytime soap couples
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos in All My Children
Ripa and Consuelos played Hayley and Mateo on the soap, and TV Insider identifies them as an on-screen romantic couple. Their relationship extended beyond the series: the actors married in 1996. The show’s fictional romance and their real-life marriage make this one of the clearest soap examples.
Susan Seaforth Hayes and Bill Hayes in Days of Our Lives
Seaforth Hayes and Hayes played Julie and Doug, who met on the soap in 1970. TV Insider reports that the performers were married from 1974 until Bill Hayes’s death in 2024. Their story is a reminder that a real-life partnership can outlast the television romance that brought its actors together.

What counts as a real-life TV couple?
A co-star relationship alone does not qualify: the characters must also have been romantic partners. Broad celebrity roundups sometimes include actors who played siblings or unrelated characters, so those examples do not answer this narrower question. Nor do real-life couples who appeared together only in a film.
The distinction matters because a list of actors who dated on a set is not the same as a list of real couples who played couples on television. These examples establish an overlap between fiction and the actors’ lives, but they do not show that the off-screen relationship caused a particular performance or on-screen chemistry. The examples here come from primetime scripted shows and daytime soaps; they should be read as a selective group, not a comprehensive count.
