Steven Spielberg is reported to be producing the Ready Player One sequel, not directing it. A March 2024 report said the film was coming but gave no timetable; the available reporting here does not establish a release date or a confirmed current production status.
Is Steven Spielberg directing the Ready Player One sequel?
According to Roger Friedman’s March 12, 2024 report for Showbiz411, Spielberg told the reporter that Ready Player Two was coming and would be produced by Spielberg rather than directed by him. The report does not provide a direct Spielberg quotation about that role, so “produce, not direct” is the outlet’s account, not a verbatim statement from Spielberg.

The report names Zak Penn as the screenplay writer. That attribution does not establish that the screenplay is finished.
What is known about the film’s timing and status?
Showbiz411 said Spielberg gave no timetable. Indian Defence Review later described the project as being in pre-production in its March 18, 2025 article, but that is a dated description, not confirmation of the film’s status on October 8, 2026. The sources cited here do not establish a release date, a confirmed current production phase, an announced director, cast, or final distribution plan.

This means the central role-change report is more definite than the production details: Spielberg was reported as producer rather than director, while when the film might arrive—and who will direct it—remains unresolved in these reports.
How does the sequel novel relate to the film?
Ernest Cline’s Ready Player Two is a novel released in 2020, described by Indian Defence Review as a new virtual-reality treasure hunt. The book and the proposed film are separate works: the novel’s publication does not prove that a film has been completed or that it will adapt every plot detail.

Indian Defence Review’s March 2025 article identifies Ready Player One as Spielberg’s 2018 film and gives its budget as $175 million, with worldwide box office of “over $580 million.” Showbiz411’s 2024 report prints a worldwide figure of $579,055,653. The reports do not explain the difference between the rounded and precise figures or cite an authoritative underlying box-office record, so they should be treated as figures reported by those outlets rather than as reconciled totals.
