By August 2026, she had seen it and said, “Oh, it’s not as bad as I thought!” Her account changed with time, but her explanation of how she qualified—and her request for the harassment to stop—are important context.
What Raygun said after the Olympics
In her first public statement after the Games, Gunn said she had hoped to bring people joy, but had not expected the reaction that followed. “I didn’t realise that that would also open the door to so much hate which has frankly been pretty devastating,” she said, as reported by ABC News on 15 August 2024.
She said she had trained hard, taken the competition seriously and given her all. She also asked the press to stop harassing her family, friends, the Australian breaking community and the wider street dance community, and to respect their privacy.
The reaction included a petition challenging her selection. The Australian Olympic Committee sought the petition’s removal; ABC reported that AOC chief executive Matt Carroll said its allegations about qualification and selection were factually incorrect. That is the AOC’s response to the allegations, not evidence that every wider debate about Gunn’s performance or competitive standing was settled.

What she said in September 2024
In a September interview with Waleed Aly on The Project, Gunn said she had not watched the viral routine in full: “I have seen little bits and pieces, but I will watch it eventually.” ABC reported on 4 September that she had received mental-health support quickly and stepped away from social media and the internet because the experience was difficult to process.
Gunn said an Australian Olympic Committee media liaison had warned her of a social-media storm after her rounds, but that she had not initially grasped its scale. She also expressed regret about the effect on the breaking community: she was sorry for the backlash others experienced, while recognizing she could not control people’s reactions. She wanted Australian breaking to have more resources so local breakers could have a chance of winning a world championship. ABC’s account of the interview records those remarks.

How did Raygun qualify for Paris?
Gunn secured her Olympic place by winning the Oceania Breaking Championships in Sydney in 2023, according to the Australian Olympic Committee athlete profile. The profile also identifies her as Australia’s first woman to compete in Olympic breaking.
For the question raised in contemporaneous coverage—“How did she even qualify?”—ABC’s explainer says the Oceania qualifier was open to eligible breakers from Australia and New Zealand, and quotes breaker and anthropologist Lucas Marie saying Gunn won the event. Marie cautioned that breaking depends on performance on the day; one competition result is not a universal ranking of who is best. The qualification path explains how Gunn earned the place, but does not require readers to regard it as a final verdict on relative ability. ABC’s 12 August 2024 explainer provides that context.

What changed when she watched the routine
Gunn’s view of the footage shifted after she eventually watched the full routine. In an interview with CNN reported by The Guardian on 26 August 2026, she said: “Oh, it’s not as bad as I thought!” She described the episode as surreal, said online reactions can carry too much influence, and contrasted the abuse she encountered online with her reception in person. She also reflected, “Paris is now just a part of my story.”
In the same interview, Gunn said female athletes face scrutiny over how they perform, what they wear and their body shape. That is her observation about her experience, not a statistical finding. The Guardian’s report recounts her comments.

How she recalled the aftermath in a documentary
In AP’s October 2026 coverage of Netflix’s documentary Untold: Raygun: Breaking Badly, Gunn recalled anticipating that “the whole world could laugh at me” and described feeling shame and distress afterward. Those are her recollections as relayed by AP. The report says the documentary also addresses rumors about her qualification; it does not make those rumors established facts. AP’s documentary coverage summarizes the account.
Breaking and the Los Angeles 2028 Games
Breaking was not scheduled for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. ABC reported that the decision to leave it off the program was made before Gunn’s Paris performance, so her routine did not cause the sport’s absence from those Games. ABC’s qualification explainer gives that timeline.
