Ray Romano’s answer to Brad Garrett’s question about making the Emmys’ In Memoriam segment was: “If it’s a slow year, no doubt.” The line was an affectionate joke, not a sign that Garrett was being memorialized. The two Everybody Loves Raymond co-stars delivered it while presenting Outstanding Comedy Series at the 77th Emmy Awards on September 14, 2025.
What happened between Ray Romano and Brad Garrett at the 2025 Emmys?
Romano and Garrett reunited onstage as presenters at the ceremony, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Their appearance was a mini-reunion of two former co-stars, not a gathering of the full Everybody Loves Raymond cast. The Television Academy had announced them as additional presenters before the show; Variety and the Associated Press reported on the exchange during the broadcast.

The banter began with jokes about getting older. The actors compared their condition now with their earlier Emmy appearance, with compression socks and hearing aids among the gags. Garrett said he had expected to return to the ceremony sooner and thought winning an Emmy would bring him more work. Romano contrasted his role in a Martin Scorsese film with Robert De Niro with Garrett’s guest appearance on The Dog Whisperer, as Variety recounted.
The In Memoriam punch line
Garrett joked that his next appearance at the Emmys might be in the In Memoriam segment. When he asked Romano whether he would make the cut, Romano replied, “If it’s a slow year, no doubt.” The joke was part of their self-deprecating stage routine; it did not mean Garrett had died or was actually included in the tribute.

The Las Vegas comedy-club gag
Romano also noted that Garrett owned a comedy club in Las Vegas. Garrett’s punch line was that it was “in the food court,” extending the exchange’s theme of mock disappointment about his career.
Why the reunion resonated with Everybody Loves Raymond fans
Romano played Ray Barone and Garrett played his older brother Robert on CBS’s Everybody Loves Raymond, which ran for nine seasons. Their onstage teasing drew on the familiar contrast between the brothers and the actors’ shared history on the sitcom.
The Emmys exchange also referenced the show’s comedy-series win 20 years earlier. That anniversary gave the reunion a specific connection to the awards ceremony rather than making it simply a pair of former co-stars appearing together. Variety reported the anniversary context along with the jokes.

The Television Academy’s advance announcement confirmed Romano and Garrett were scheduled presenters, but did not name the category they would present. Variety reported that they presented Outstanding Comedy Series and described the stage banter; the Associated Press also recapped the mini-reunion and In Memoriam joke. The ceremony took place Sunday, September 14, 2025. The Academy’s announcement described Paramount+ access for that broadcast, but it does not establish whether the 2025 telecast remains available there now.
